Late Shot Propels Hornets To Classic Title;
Lady Hornets Close But No Brass Ring
"Our kids find a way to win," Coach
Gary Tipton said of his Hornet baskct-
ballcrs w ho won three games by a grand
total of 6 points to capture the Lake
Meredith Classic championship on Sat-
urday night. The Maroon and White
slopped tal l Perry ton in a Th ursday cliff-
hanger. notched a 64-60 decision over
Gruver in a semi-final match Friday and
clipped host Sanford-Fritch 60-59 in the
title match.
With the home team up 59-57 and less
than a minute to play, Mike Smith went
to the line for a pair of shoots. The first
dropped through the net, but the second
rimmed out
Smith won the scramble for the re-
bound, put up a shot which was shy of
the mark and lipped the ball in off his
own rebound for the winning points
with seconds left.
Ryan McCaslin blanketed Johnson,
"their best shooter," whose last-ditch
shot didn’t come close to the rim.
S-F jumped off to a 20-13 lead after
eight minutes.
"I thought we got to play three good
basketball teams in row," said Coach
Tipton, whose club emerged from the
tourney with a 5-1 record, their best
basketball start in several campaigns.
Players received individual medals.
The Hornet mentor said "Our kids are
playing hard and getting after it."
Smith, a senior, was the leading Tulia
scorer in each game with 20, 21 and 19
points, respectively. Dwain Hawthorne
canned 16, 16 and 13 while ringleader
Tyson Willis put in 16,12 and 13.
Senior Kyle Barnett has been slowed
by a knee injury, and fellow senior Darin
Via sustained a tooth injury in a traffic
accident.

ONE QUARTER LIKELY
COSTS LADIES TITLE
After having their victory skein bro-
ken at 19 by Canyon last Tuesday, the
Lady Hornets started on a new streak
Thursday in the Lake Meredith Classic.
One scoreless quarter, however, cost
them the championship and a lengthy
winning streak.
Tulia’s ladies came out of the dressing
room at intermission of the Saturday
championship match against Panhandle
owning a 25-20 advantage. The Lady
Panthers reeled off 13 unanswered
points in quarter number three to move
in front 33-25.
The Maroon and White still almost
salvaged a victory before time expired
with them on the short end of a 38-36
score.
Coach Dale Morris' Lady Hornets
pelted Perryton, coached by their former
assistant mentor, Sharon Birkcnfeld,
45-24 and knocked off Dumas 51-40 in
a Friday semi-final contest.
"I felt like we played good on Thurs-
day and even a little better on Friday, a
little smoother," Coach Morris said.
"Saturday we did a good job except for
the third period. We didn't score in that
quarter. Panhandle outscored us 13-0 in
the third period, which probably cost us
the ballgame."
Seniors Kandy Smith and Katie Van-
zee again were the Tulia scoring leaders.
Smith put in 16, 20 and 14 in the three
matches while Vanzee netted 11,11 and
9.
The Tulia ladies owned a 5-2 record
after the tourney.

Hornet JV Grabs Title
In Muleshoe Tourney
Battling Lady Hornet JV Just Shy
Although their performance was not
as sharp Saturday as the previous day, it
was good enough for the Hornet JV to
sack up championship honors in the
Muleshoe JV Tournament with a 69-58
decision over Farwell.
"We didn't play as well and shoot as
well Saturday," Coach Darren King
said. "They got in a zone and we had
trouble hitting outside."
The team's Friday outing, a 77-40
victory over Friona, "was probably our
best game of the year. Coach King’s
improving crew polished off Lockncy
70-21 in their tourney opener Thursday.
Hornet JV exited the tournament with
a 5-1 record.
Balance is a key word on the squad as
six players scored in double figures one
or more games: Chris Mahaney,
Karcem White, Cash Love, Lee Bar-
tram, Jerome Hawthorne and Shane
Reese.

The stars are destined to shine in
this week's Antelope Invitational

With 12 teams in each bracket,

Friday in New Deal.
The third place game is scheduled
for 1:40 p.m. Saturday, the consola-
tion will be decided at 4:30 and the
championship unreels at 7:20.
Coach Gary Tipton's Hornet var-
sity is matched against 4-A Lubbock
Estacado at 3:35 p.m. Friday in the
Abernathy gym. Estacado is "real
quick."
A first-round win would advance
Tulia’s boys to a contest against the
Scminole-Nazareth winner at 11:20
a.m. Friday and a Thursday loss
would leave them with a 2:30 p.m.
Friday match against Crosbyton or
Randall.
Some Saturday morning games
are to be necessary in both divisions.
The boys third place match will be
decided at 3:05 p.m. Saturday, the
consolation game is at 5:55 and tipoff
in the championship will be at 8:45.

Deal, Whitefacc, Seminole, Naza-
reth, Estacado, Tulia, Crosbyton,

LADY HORNETS JV JUST
NIPPED BY QUICK CLOVIS
At the end of a 2 hour, 10 minute
marathon Friday, the Lady Hornet JV
was on the short end of a 44-40 count
against a "real quick" Clovis, N.M.,
squad. The semi-final match, in the
opinion of Coach Kathy Rigsby, was
Todd Lacey Chosen Offensive
Lone Star Conference Co-MVP
Despite being sidelined the last two games with injury, Eastern New Mexico
University quarterback Todd Lacey has been selected as the 1991 offensive co-
Most Valuable Player in the Lone Star Conference. He is a former standout Tulia
Hornet athlete.
Lacey paced ENMU to its initial LSC championship.
Following the injury he underwent surgery on a calf muscle in his leg,
according to his father, Ronald Lacey of Tulia.
He plans to be graduated this month with a bachelor’s degree in finance. His
future plans are indefinite.
The Tulia High School graduate played football four seasons and went through
a redshirt year when he was injured. The Herald has contacted Eastern New Mexico
University for Lacey's senior year and career statistics. Those had not been received
at press time.
Former Lady Hornet Selected To
Pre-Season All-WJCAC Cage Team
South Plains College’s Terry Alexan-
der, Shannon (Willis) Jennings and
Stephanie Cotter were recently named
to the Western Junior College Athletic
Conference pre-season all-conference
team.
Jennings, a 5-9 post, earned all-dis-
trict, all-region and all-state honors at
Tulia, which forged a 31-3 overall rec-
ord en route to the Class 3 A state cham-
pionship.
The 18-year-old physical education
major was also selected to the Lubbock
Avalanche-Journal's all-South Plains
team and the Amarillo Globe News
Super Team.
Cotter, a 5-3 guard, earned all-dis-
trict, all region and all state honors at
Canyon, which posted a 30-3 overall
record en route to the Region 1-3A fi-
nals.
actually for the title because "I believe
those were the best two teams."
Tulia’s three main inside girls got into
early foul trouble, and Clovis also had a
number of fouls called on it. Referees’
whistles sounded 32 times in the second
quarter alone.
"We lost that game, the referees didn't
cause us to lose it," Coach Rigsby was
quick to emphasize.
Although this ended their four-game
win streak to open the season, Coach
Rigsby was obviously proud of her
crew. "These girls fight so hard," she
said.
The Lady Hornets took out Sudan 56-

place trophy.
