WINDOW VENTILATION.Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 8, 1910.
Application filed April 2, 1909. Serial No. 487,502.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JuIUs J. BEST, citi-
zen of the United States, residing at Wood-
ville, in the county of Tyler and State of
5 Texas, have invented certain new and useful
Improvements in Window Ventilation, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to window ven-
tilators and its main object is to produce a
10 device of this kind that will be efficient in
its operation and not expensive as to its cost.
In warm, dry weather a house may be ven-
tilated by simply raising the window, but in
damp, rainy, or cold weather this cannot be
15 done with efficiency. Therefore I have in-
vented a device which is adapted to be
placed in the ordinary frame of a window
that will afford means of ventilation with-
out the usual disagreeable conditions accom-
20 panying. This device may be so placed in
the frame of a window and the window
let down upon it that it needs no other fas-
tening means to hold it in place.
With these and other objects in view my
25 invention consists of the novel construction
and arrangement of parts as are illustrated
in the accompanying drawings forming a
part of this specification the novelty of such
construction being particularly pointed out
30 in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1
is an elevation of my device in position,
looking from the outside of a window in
the frame of which it is placed. Fig. 2

viewed from the inside of a building. Fig.

46 Referring more particularly to the accom-
panying drawings, my invention is de-
scribed as follows:
The window frame 1, is supplied with the
usual guide-rails 2, between which the win-
45 dow-sash travels.
The frame 3, of the ventilator 4, is com-
posed of two substantially rectangular sec-
tions 5. Extending outwardly then up-
wardly from each of said sections is a flue
50 6, provided with a cap 7, pivotally mounted
at the upper end thereof by means of a
spindle 8. Each of said spindles is actuated
by means of a hand-lever 9, by means of
which said caps may be tilted at various
55 angles as illustrated in Fig. 3. The side-walls of each of said flues terminate at their
upper ends in V-shaped peaks 10, the object
of which will be obviously apparent. Se-
cured to either or both of said sections 5,
are inverted U-shaped members 11, for the 00
reception of the window-sash when said
frame 4, is placed in position.
When putting the ventilator in the win-
dow, raise the window-sash and place the
said ventilator in the window frame as illus- 65
trated in Fig. 4, diagrammatically. The
ventilator being in position let the window-
sash down upon the frame of said ventilator
far enough as to be received by said mem-
bers 11. If, when the ventilator is placed in 70
position, the wind is coming into the room
too strong the caps 7, may be manipulated
in such a manner as to regulate the same.
Though I have specifically described my
invention I may claim the right to make 75
such changes in the construction and ar-
rangement of the parts thereof as fall with-
in the scope of the claims hereunto attached.
Having described my invention what I
claim as new is:
1. In a window ventilator two substan-
tially rectangular sections hinged together
securely, flues, one extending outwardly
from each of said sections, then upwardly
the side walls thereof terminating in V- 85
shaped peaks and a cap provided at the
points thereof, said cap or lid being so piv-
oted midway on the peaks as to close either
one side or the other of the flues and means
comprising a lever for regulating the posi- go
tion of said cap, substantially as shown.
2. A device of the class described compris-
ing a flue, a cap pivotally mounted at the
upper end thereof, the side-walls of said flue
terminating in V-shaped peaks, said cap so 95
mounted midway on the peaks as to close
one side or the other of the flue, a spindle as
means whereby said cap is mounted, and a
hand-lever secured at one end of said spindle
for the adjustment of the position of said log
cap, substantially as described.
3. In a window ventilator of the class de-
scribed2 two substantially rectangular sec-
tions hinged securely together, flues, one ex-
tending outwardly from each of said sec- 105
tions, then upwardly, the side walls thereof
terminating in V-shaped peaks, said peaks
falling near the center of said side walls,
said peaks each provided with a perforation
passing therethrough, a cap provided with 110948,779.
