Special Occasion
Gifts For The Grad
Here are some of the best gifts to get your graduate, and tips on
throwing a sensational graduation party.
By: Christie Bohm Chase, Staff Writer
From high-school graduates to doctoral
candidates, graduation is a time for family
gatherings, celebrations, good-byes, and new
beginnings. Laughter is heard, hats are tossed,
tears are shed, parties are thrown and gifts are
given. Each spring, thousands of graduation
ceremonies are held in high-school stadiums
and college arenas across the country,
acknowledging the hard work and dedication of
the graduates. If you are like most Americans,
someone you know will graduate this year.
There are many suitable choices when it
comes to choosing a graduation gift. Whether
you choose something practical, something
frivolous, or something personal, your grad will
appreciate the gesture. Have fun celebrating,
and hats off to the graduating class of 2006.
Gift Guide
Perfectly Practical
The end of both high school and college
usually signify a big change in one’s life. Many
graduates move out on their own, head off to
dorm rooms, start new jobs, or begin studying
for another diploma. There are many practical,
useful, needed items which are perfect
graduation gifts.
• For those starting a new job, equip them
with a new brief case or a business
card holder, for their own cards and
those they collect.
• If your graduate is still in search of
employment, a resume service can
give their resume a stunning makeover.
Another helpful gift is a “how-to”
book, such as “how-to interview”, or
“how-to dress professionally”.
• Moving to a new town can be scary,
especially if it is the first move away from
home. Send your graduate off with a
Key map of the city they are moving to.
To encourage frequent visits, give a
weekend travel bag or backpack.
Garnish their kitchen with cooking
utensils and kitchen supplies, and
give them a telephone with
answering machine, so that you can
stay in touch.
• First-time dorm dwellers are faced with
many responsibilities that they may have
not held before. Laundry can become
overwhelming in a small dorm room.
Wash away their laundry woes with a
personalized laundry bag or
clothes hamper. Dorm-living often
means sharing a small space with a
stranger; so, give your grad a storage
trunk to keep their personal items safe
and neatly together. A new alarm clock
and radio will help your student wake-
up on time for early classes. Note-taking
is often more challenging in college, and
a pocket tape recorder can make a
handy gift. Whether your graduate needs
a sweatshirt for a football game, or a last
minute textbook, a campus
bookstore gift certificate will warm
his or her heart.
• Other practical yet fun gift ideas include;
a prepaid phone card, a magazine
or newspaper subscription, a
cellular phone, or a camera.
Frivolous and Fun
Graduation is a great time to buy your
graduate something fun that they would not
ordinarily buy themselves. Frivolous gifts are a
great way to congratulate their achievement, -
after all, they deserve it.
• Sports enthusiasts would love new
sports gear. If your graduate likes to
spend time working out, consider a gym
membership.
• Often, graduation induces the need to
relax or get away. Many graduates head
off to the local beach, while others
embark on a tour of Europe. Surprise
your graduate with a special trip.
Anything from a weekend mini-vacation
to a summer-long excursion is sure to be
appreciated and remembered forever.
• For the music lover, opt for a portable
MP3 player, which are popular with all
ages. Treat your graduate to a shopping
spree at their favorite shop, with a
thoughtful store gift certificate, or a
meal at their favorite eatery with a
restaurant gift certificate.
Personal Touch
Personal items make a nice, cherished gift.
Each time the gift is used, seen, or held, your
graduate will think of you and remember the
special occasion.
• Often, close relatives give something that
has been in the family for awhile. Such
gifts include quilts, rings, family
photos, or other sentimental items.
• Gifts of jewelry make nice mementos
for graduates. They last a long time, as
do belt buckles, watches, leather
wallets, and luggage sets.
• Keep correspondence with your graduate
with a gift of pre-stamped envelopes
and monogrammed stationary, or
consider giving an engraved pen set.
• Add to a prized collection by giving a
sought-after collectible.
• Items such as blow-dryers, bath-
soaps, potpourri sachets and
drawer liners are both practical and
personal, and make lovely gifts.
• Home or dorm decorating items such as
picture frames, wall hangings,
candle holders, throw-pillows, or
furniture help make a comfortable,
warm living space, and are also a nice
gift.
• Most graduates are low on cash, and
may not be able to afford to frame their
diploma. Before they stash it in a box
somewhere, have it framed for them.
They will appreciate being able to see
their beautifully framed diploma,
signifying their achievement.
Tips For a Great
Graduation Party
• Serve a buffet or finger foods
instead of a sit-down meal.
• Play background music for your
guests, and set out memory
books and photos of the
graduate.
• Lift spirits with colored helium
balloons. Check local grocery
stores, party supply stores or
card shops to order them ahead
of time.
• Flowers make fragrant, festive
decorations. Consider buying
small potted plants from a local
greenhouse and placing them
around the party area.
• Congratulations banners can be
purchased at most local party
supply stores or card shops and
hung on the walls for the
celebration. If you have access
to a good printer and print
program, you can make banners
personalized.
