The Greensheet and VOLUNTEER HOUSTON collaborate to bring you the following information
volunteer opportunities for young people.
HISTORY AND DESTINY will be intertwined themes at the annual San Jacinto Day Festival taking
place April 25 in LaPorte. This celebration of the legendary Battle of San Jacinto features a full day
of music, food, games, and fun. Volunteers will be needed to greet the public and assist at an
t information booth and water station. In return for their time, volunteers will be accorded parking
passes and free lunch. The minimum age for individual volunteers is 17, but persons as young as 14
1 can volunteer if accompanied by an adult.
• TURN BACK THE CLOCK on decades of deterioration and neglect by participating in a ongoing
• project aimed at restoring dignity and beauty to a historic African-American cemetery located just
^ northwest of downtown Houston. On the morning of April 25, lots of volunteers will be needed to
help with cleanup and general maintenance of the grounds, including dealing with damage and
• debris left by Hurricane Ike. Consider scooping up a pair of work gloves and coming by to pitch in.
Youth volunteers are cordially welcome.
REALLY CLEAN UP as a volunteer at the Texas Adopt-a-Beach Spring Cleanup, sponsored by the
• Texas General Land Office. This huge event will take place the morning of April 25 all along the
0 Texas coast. Working as part of a team of “beach buddies”, you’ll help remove debris that spoils the
appearance of our shoreline and poses severe hazards to marine wildlife. (Some of the debris can
• be recycled to fund other environmental improvement projects.) Call now to reserve a place for
0 yourself on the beach of your choice. There is no minimum age if accompanied by an adult;
otherwise the minimum is 15.
® CELEBRATE MOTHER’S DAY one day early by participating in a visit to local nursing homes on
0 Saturday, May 9. If you have some time available that morning, plan on coming to either of two
meeting places (near the Galleria or close to Willowbrook Mall) and teaming up with other
® volunteers to visit one of several facilities. You’ll be given handmade Mother’s Day cards and other
^ goodies to share with the persons you visit. There’s no minimum age requirement, as long as each
volunteer is able to provide for his or her transportation.
J FEATHERED FRIENDS will be your focus when you volunteer in the avian section of a wildlife
V rehabilitation center in west Houston. There are more baby birds injured and orphaned in the spring
A than in any other time of the year, so volunteers will be especially needed over the next couple of
A months to help out. Staff at the center will be happy to teach you all you need to know about the
■ care and feeding of these beaked buddies to enable you to nurse them to good health. Weekly duty
H shifts typically last four hours and are available on weekdays and weekends, during the daytime or
H early evening. The minimum age for volunteers is 12.

FOR SELF-STARTERS: : Sew simple stuffed animals for children in families that have lost their
homes through fire or natural disaster. You can do the work at home and at your own pace.
DID YOU KNOW that an organization in Washington, D.C., named Independent Sector, does a
national survey every two years to identify trends in volunteering and charitable donations? Key
results of their most recent study are always posted on their Web site: www.independentsector.org.
For additional information on volunteer opportunities, please contact VOLUNTEER HOUSTON at
