Home Improvement
Creating Curb Appeal.
Give your home an inviting first impression from the street.
By: Christie Bohm Chase, Staff Writer
While driving through a neighborhood you’ll
notice that certain houses stand-out, giving off
a warm, inviting appeal. Whether it’s the
curving brick walkway, the hanging flower
baskets or neatly trimmed plants that draw your
eye in, houses with curb appeal brighten up a
street. No matter the size or age of your home,
you too can easily and inexpensively create
curb appeal using various trees and plants,
lighting and decorative touches.
Smart and creative landscaping can increase
the value of your home. Compared to other
home improvements, landscaping projects are
relatively low cost. The best way to add curb
appeal to your home is to take care of the
plants that you already have. A healthy lawn,
nicely pruned trees, and well-kept flower beds
and shrubbery cost almost nothing to maintain
yet boost your home’s attractiveness. When
purchasing new plants, spend the most money
on evergreen type plants that are attractive
year round. Compliment evergreen shrubs and
bushes with seasonal perennials and annuals.
If you slowly add plants, trees and decorations
to your landscaping over time, it will be easier
to afford. You can also cut maintenance costs
by limiting the size of your lawn and relying on
native plants to garnish your landscape. Try
clustering plants that need a lot of water in one
spot.
Container Creations
Container gardens offer an easy way to liven
up a drab yard, patio, porch or deck. Not only
are the plants in the container pleasing to look
at, but the containers themselves become a
part of a decorative landscape. The wonderful
thing about container plants is that you can
move the pots around and change plantings
whenever you desire, giving your yard a fresh
look each season. From trees to shrubs to tiny
flowers, containers offer a great way to display
specific foliage in your yard. Container gardens
are great for displaying plants that are not
native to your area, because the climate and
water can be controlled. Although you will need
to prune and fertilize them, many container
gardens require little care. Here are a few tips
for incorporating container gardens into your
yardscape.
• Group several small containers of
varied sizes together as a display.
• Choose plants that aren’t used
elsewhere in the garden
• Don’t use undersized containers;
select planters large enough to fit in
with the scale of your garden.
• Water on a daily basis because
containers can dry out quickly.
Decorative Designs
Adding beauty and character to your home’s
exterior can be as simple as adding a
decorative doorbell plate, or as complex as
restructuring and replanting your entire yard.
Following are a few of the many things
homeowners can do to create curb appeal and
give their home a facelift.
• In lieu of cement, opt for a stone path
leading up to the front entry. Choose
cobblestone pavers, stepping stones or
bricks for a unique, complementary
look.
• Illuminate borders, shrubs, and the
front walkway with attractive, low-
voltage lights, and add a few spotlights
to highlight specific plants or trees.
• Spruce up a boring porch, deck or
patio floor with vivid color. From
cement stains to wood paint, opt for
designs or solid patterns to liven up
your yard.
• Craft your own garden stepping stones
using pre-mix cement (available at a
local home improvement store,) and
glass chips, colorful stones or
seashells. After pouring the cement
into a mold, you can add decorative
items to make designs, or spell out
your name.
• Nestle statues or stone birdbaths amid
your foliage.
• Garnish your front door with a wreath
and/or decorative door knocker.
• Add a small bench at the outdoor
entryway to give visitors a place to rest
and enjoy the yard.
• Vine-clad arbors and trellises add
character and height to a yard. Visit a
local nursery or store that sells garden
accessories to find an arbor that fits
your yard.
• Create a cozy feeling with hanging
baskets of flowers.
• Incorporate ornaments and furnishings
like garden benches, birdbaths,
gazebos, and sculptures to make an
interesting and artistic garden. Flea
markets, garage sales and antique
shops are great places to shop for
garden treasures.
• Boulders and large rocks are natural
wonders. Ask farmers or building
contractors to save ones they come
across as they work a site.
• Don’t overlook everyday items for use
in your yard. Old bicycles baskets, iron
grates galvanized buckets, and vintage
painted lumber add personality to a
landscape.
Spruce Up Your Yard
Tools For Spring
Since it is the season for pruning,
plucking and planting, make
your job easier by getting your
tools in shape before starting
work outdoors.
• Remove any rust from metal
parts with a sanding block
• Lubricate fulcrums and
moving parts on pruning
tools
• Sand wooden tool handles to
eliminate splinters
• Sharpen blades to make
cutting easier
