The Greensheet
on volunteer opportunities for young people.
• FIGHT HUNGER by participating February 2 or 3 in the “Souper Bowl of Caring”--
• the largest food drive ever held in the greater Houston area. The work will be easy: you’ll staff a
food donation station at a participating grocery store in your area and answer questions posed
by potential donors. Most shifts will last about two hours. The minimum age for individual
volunteers is 16, but youngsters down to age 12 can participate if accompanied by an adult.
ENJOY A SPECIAL RODEO taking place February 9 in Humble. This fun-filled event will pit
sixteen teams of disaster response volunteers in friendly competition using skills they would
• employ in real emergencies. Support volunteers will be needed to greet participants, assist at
0 event skill stations, and help direct parking. Morning and afternoon shifts will be available.
Volunteers under age 18 will be welcome if they are able to provide parental consent forms.
_ TRIUMPHS OF THE SPIRIT become regular occurrences for children with disabilities through a
dynamic arts program in session on Saturday mornings at a community center near River Oaks.
• This program helps kids express their creative potential in music, painting, mime, drama, or
m sculpture. You don’t have to be a professional to help in this process, just a caring individual
willing to contribute an hour or more a week. Volunteers as young as 15 are invited to
• participate.
8 HEARTS AND FLOWERS will be your focus when you make Valentine cards for an agency that
a sponsors visits to institutional shut-ins in connection with a number of holidays throughout the
year. The next visits on the schedule will take place in early February in honor of Valentine’s
• Day. Having handmade greeting cards to share with the persons visited will help make the
f occasion all the more special for everyone involved. You can make the cards at home and deliver
them at your convenience to the agency’s Galleria area office. No minimum age is involved, and
R this can be a great project for individual volunteers, families, or organized groups.
GO ALONG FOR THE RIDE by volunteering with a program that provides therapeutic horseback
riding opportunities for youngsters with disabilities. As a “side walker” you’ll accompany these
kids while they enjoy the special thrill of a horseback stroll in a protected environment under
the guidance of physical therapists. The program has sites in Hockley, Spring, and Missouri City,
and riding sessions take place on weekdays (during the daytime and evening) and Saturdays
(during the daytime). The minimum age for volunteers is 14.
FOR SELF-STARTERS: Visit elderly or disabled shut-ins. There’s probably a nursing home in your
area that would welcome your coming by to play games with residents or just chat with them.
DID YOU KNOW that Houston has more volunteers regularly helping out in hospitals and clinics
than any other city in the world?
