The City of Nassau Bay Presents
2012 RE/MAX' BALLUNAR LIFTOFF
r s I i
SAAJOHNSON SPACE CENTER
er 28-30, 2012
Over 50 hot air balloons will entertain
audiences Sept. 28-30 at a weekend-long
festival on the grounds of NASA Johnson
Space Center in the Clear Lake area.
In its 19th year, the RE/MAX Ballunar Liftoff
Festival, presented by the City of Nassau Bay,
is the only event of its kind in the greater
Houston metropolitan area that offers
audiences a glimpse of hot air balloons that
compete and participate in several events,
celebrating mankind s fascination with flight
and its bold pursuit of discovery.
Festival admission is $10 per vehicle when
tickets are purchased online at
www.ballunarfestival.com; otherwise tickets
are $20 at the gate per vehicle, which includes
free onsite parking at Johnson Space Center.
The participating hot air balloons compete
before a live audience on Saturday and
Sunday morning of the festival, most notably in
the Space Shuttle Rendezvous event
Saturday, where the object is to see if a
balloon pilot can navigate to and drop a hula-
hoop on the nose of an inflated replica of a
NASA space shuttle. To see the competition on
Saturday and Sunday, arrive early at 7 a.m.
when the gates open.
During the Friday and Saturday evening
portions of the festival, the hot air balloons set
up and fire off their burners in dramatic
displays at dusk. Beginning at about 8 p.m.,
these balloon glow events provide a great
opportunity for photos and family fun and are
accompanied by live music. During the
opening ceremonies on Friday night and
before the Balloon Glow on Saturday night,
festival attendees will see a dramatic
ascension of a 30-foot American flag during
the national anthem.
In between and during the hot air balloon
events, festival attendees can also participate
in the NASA Open House on Saturday from 9
a.m. to 4 p.m. which includes exhibits rarely
seen by the public. In addition to astronaut
training facilities and a mock-up of the ISS,
new displays will reveal the next generation of
vehicles and technology currently in
development. Astronauts will be signing
autographs at the event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
on Saturday.
A “Salute to Public Safety” exposition will be
held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., showcasing many
aspects of public safety from cities around the
Clear Lake area and Harris County. Children
can meet their local policeman and fireman,
get in a fire truck or SWAT vehicle and learn
about how their lives are being protected.
On Friday and Saturday night during the
balloon glows, M.D. Anderson s Regional Care
Center in Clear Lake will showcase “Hope,” a
120-foot tall special shape pink ribbon hot air
balloon. M.D. Anderson physicians and staff
will be on hand during the event to pass out
free educational materials and pink glow
necklaces to spread the light of breast cancer
awareness and hope.
The Fried Ice Cream Band will perform
Friday, Sept. 28 during the festival and Infinite
Groove will perform the evening of Saturday,
Sept. 29. Both bands will perform a high-
tempo mixture of rock, pop and rhythm and
blues.
On Saturday, aeronautic displays are
punctuated by daylong skydiving exhibitions,
para-gliders and hang-gliders. Arts & crafts
vendors, business exhibitors and a midway
with rides for the kids is also on-site; vendors
will sell a variety of food and offer other
activities for kids of all ages.
Returning to the festival this year, Sonny the
Birdman will present an exotic bird show at
9:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Saturday,
and The Texas Snakeman from Texas Snakes
& More will educate and entertain people
about snakes at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
A Houston tradition, the non-profit RE/MAX
Ballunar Liftoff Festival sprouted wings in 1993
and is now a hallmark event that encourages
young people s interest in math and science
through the study of aeronautics. Nassau Bay,
the traditional hometown for the engineers and
pilots who pioneered America s space
exploration, has given partnership support in
bringing the festival to an ever-wider audience
of families.
Proceeds from the festival benefit school-age
children across the Houston metropolitan area.
Grants to the Manned Space Flight Education
Foundation brings Title 1 school children, Pre
K and K-12 on field trips to the Johnson Space
Center and it s museum, Space Center
Houston.
Students participate in hands-on interactive
activities including seeing the inside of a space
shuttle, learning about the controls in the flight
deck, simulations of operating robots on Mars
and how astronauts must prepare for the
physical limitations of living in space.
The RE/MAX Ballunar Liftoff Festival is
produced by hundreds of Clear Lake-area
volunteers in conjunction with the non-profit
organization s board of directors comprised of
various community leaders in the greater Clear
Lake area. Community service is provided by
local Boy Scouts every year to help with the
clean-up detail.
To promote the festival this year, RE/MAX of
Texas is sponsoring a social-media based
photography contest, looking for photos that
exemplify aeronautic discovery - including hot
air balloons, of course. The winner of the photo
contest will be chosen before the festival
begins and will receive a hot air balloon ride in
the RE/MAX balloon at this year s event. A
second contest will solicit festival goers to
submit photos from this year s festival for the
prize of a RE/MAX balloon ride that can be
scheduled for anytime in the next year.
Also new this year, professional and amateur
photography enthusiasts may pre-register as
official photographers for the event. Pre-
registration provides these photographers with
a pass that gives them access to an area just
for photographers.
Details of the contest and photography
passes are online at the Ballunar Festival
website.
