August Permits to Drill
The Commission issued a total of 666 original
drilling permits in August compared to 1,216 in
August 1997. Total drilling permits for 1998 year
to date is 6,904 down from 9,380 recorded during
the same period in 1997. The August total in-
cluded 474 permits to drill new oil and gas wells,
30 to re-enter existing well bores, and 162 for
re-completions. Permits issued in August in-
cluded 155 oil, 182 gas, 309 oil and gas, 18 injection
and 2 other permits. In the Panhandle district,
there were 70 permits to drill oil and gas holes
issued in August.
August Oil and Gas Completions
In August, operators reported 287 oil, 389 gas,
23 injection completions, compared to 318 oil, 387
gas and 24 injection completions during the same
month of last year. Total well completions for 1998
year to date is 7,395 up from 6,142 recorded dur-
ing the same period in 1997. Operators reported
743 holes plugged and 133 dry holes in August
compared to 523 plugged and 128 dry holes during
the same period last year. There were 19 oil and
30 gas completions reported in the Panhandle last
month.
June Crude Oil Production
Texas preliminary June 1998 crude oil production
averaged 1,239,104 barrels daily, down from the
1,300,966 barrels daily average of June 1997. The pre-
liminary Texas crude oil production figure for June 1998
is 37,173,134 barrels, a decrease from 39,028,970 barrels
reported during June 1997.
The top ten oil-producing countias in Texas during
June were Gaines (2,955,410 bbls), Yoakum (2,404,459
bbls), Andrews (2,368,632 bbls), Hockley (2,111,010
bbls), Ector (2,056,002 bbls), Pecos (1,794,586 bbls),
Crane (1,117,600 bbls), Gregg (1,054,575 bbls), Midland
(984,597 bbls), Upton (816,911 bbls).
June Natural Gas Production
Texas oil and gas wells produced 458,421,555 Mcf
(thousand cubic feet) of gas based upon preliminary
production figures for June 1998, down from the June
1997 preliminary gas production total of 444,088,028
Mcf. Texas production in June came from 160,205 oil and
52,825 gas wells.
Hemphill County wells produced 6,754,253 Mcf of
gas in June. The top ten producing counties were Webb
(25,977,565 Mcf), Zapata (24,712,936 Mcf), Hidalgo
(21,428,173 Mcf), Panola (20,424,945 Mcf), Pecos
(19,602,083 Mcf), Crockett (11,785,539 Mcf), Starr
(11,412,492 McD, Yoakum (8,520,727 Mcf), Crane
(8,230,223 Mcf), Harris (7,287,302 McD.
