Holy Ghost Drill Team Wins Trophy
At St. Thomas Fall Festival Sunday
Who loves a parade?
We all do (except old foggies
who don’t believe in witches and
goblins and itsy bitsy ghosts).
Ail the rest of us, of course,
will be along the line of
broom-flight Friday afternoon
at 2 p.m. when Taylor’s
Terrors and Duval’s Devils...
in fact, a whole cauldron’s
brew of Condit Hallowe’en
Paraders . . . stage their an-
nual parade.
In fact, 1199 Condit youngsters
will march along in the parade.
Imagine all those little hob-
goblins advancing up Rice Ave.
from Condit to Bellaire Blvd.,
down Bellaire to Third St„ and
then back down Third to Condit.
“And we make our teachers
march with us,” chirped our in-
formant. “And they’ll wear
masks, too, just like us.”
Kids making the march are
from kindergarten through 6th
Grade.
And this year, something ex-
tra has been added!
Each classroom will carry
out a special motif — one en-
tire room of scarecrows! An-
other room of witches! Another
. .. bums! Or Indian Spirits!
So, folks, be on hand for the
big witches parade: 2 p.m., Fri-
day.

The Committee for Rezoning

action and another zoning battle
is shaping up.

Blvd.
May Seek Ellection
The committee has presented
its proposals to the Bellaire
Planning Board.
And it has taken an advertise-
ment in this issue of The TEXAN
to present its case to the people.
The committee says it is pre-
pared to initiate a referendum
on the question if it gets no
satisfaction from the planning
committee or city council.
Trick and Treat
Has Serious Tone
There’s much excitement
these days.
Spooks, ghosts, witches,
devils, skeletons, clowns — and
Lady and the Tramp — are
getting ready for Hallowe’en.
Next Monday night trick
and treating is in store for
Bellaire area households.
Yet this eve of All Saint’s
Day will have a serious note,
too. Many of the costumed
youngsters will be asking for
money for UNICEF or CROP.
St. Matthew’s Episcopal,
Bellaire Presbyterian, Bell-
aire Methodist and Bellaire
Christian churches have in-
dicated that their Sunday
School members will be ring-
ing doorbells for either
UNICEF, the United Nations
Children’s Fund, sponsored
locally by the United Church
Women of Houston, or CROP

The new Holy Ghost School
Drill Team won the coveted first
place in Class A competition
Sunday at the St. Thomas Fall
Festival and was awarded a gold
trophy.
Aspen Street Fire
A mattress and bed caught
fire Thursday around noon at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. W.
L. Burns, 5553 Aspen, causing
estimated damage of $350, says
Fire Chief Hutchens.

Kay Gallagher Wins
Kay Gallagher, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Gallagher,
5317 Patrick Henry, was crown-
ed sweetheart of the Bellaire
Chapter of Future Farmers of
America Friday night at the
Cardinal Varieties at Bel-Hi. The
student body chose Kay from
seven candidates.
The 39 girls, trim in their red
and white uniforms, performed
the Rock - Around - the - Clock
military drill in competition
against four other parochial
schools.
Their expertness made them
champions even though they
have been practicing as a mili-
tary unit only since summer at
the direction of Coach Mrs. Jean
Loesch, physic a 1 education
teacher at Holy Ghost school.
On the field Marian McKen-
na, major of the drill team, put
the team through the maneuvers
and six drummers and four
twirlers in brilliant costumes
added to the color and effective-
ness of the team.
All Saint’s drill team came in
second; Our Lady of Mount Car-
mel, first in Class AA com-
petition and St. Teresa’s team,
second.
