Independent Moderates Disavow
Labels In School Board Race
A group of school board can-
didates, labeling themselves the
independent moderates, disavow-
ed labels and promised to “do
our utmost to upgrade public
school education in Houston to
the very highest possible level.”
Members of the slate are Rev.
'‘James L. Novarro, chairman;
Mrs. Dan Dudney, James R. Fer-
guson and J. Fielding Gouge.
In a prepared statement the
Independent Moderates charged
that “Liberalism and Conserva-
tism have no real place in this
School Board election. We cha-
llenge anyone to show us un-
diluted liberalism or conserva-
tism. In the case of either group,
wd believe they will find that
'the lines cross and recross many
times. We believe people are sick
of labels and are sick of politi-
cians who spend more time wor-

ponsibility to the voters.”
The group pledged “full co-
operation to the administrative
personnel to direct our
school system. Serving in a
policy-making body, we believe,
is the real duty of an elected
member of the school board.
In their statement the group
also resolved:
1. To work toward eliminating
factionalism.
2. To consider all issues on the
basis of merit.
3. To make the welfare of the
student the prime consideration
in establishing policies.
4. To relieve teachers of bur-
donsome responsibilities not per-
taining to teaching.
5. To work for fewer shacks
and more functional buildings.
6. To strengthen the curricu-
lum in relation to the needs of
the times under the direction of
qualified educators.
7. To begin a long-range plan-
ning of school building construc-
tion through consultation with
city and county planning offices.
BELLAIRE COUPLE MARK
65TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
A fiftieth wedding anniversary
is usually an occasion of special
congratulations.
This week Bellaire extends
good wishes to a couple who
have bested that golden 50-year
number by 15 years.
Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Myers,
4911 Linden, were married 65
years ago Monday!
It was on Oct. 24, 1895 that I
Miss Eva Boone (a descendant
of Daniel Boone) became the
bride of Harry M. Myers in Holly
Springs, Mississippi. The couple
spent the early years of their
marriage in Tennessee and in
1911 moved to San Antonio
where Mr. Myers was in the stove
manufacturing business. They
moved to Bellaire in 1937. Be- |
fore his retirement, Mr. Myers i
was connected with Phoenix Fur- '
niture Co. for many years.
Mr. and Mrs. Myers are mem-
bers of Bellaire Methodist
Church. They count among their
loyal friends members of the
Shepherds Club of the church
who visit them regularly.
The couple marked the anni-
versary of their wedding day
Monday with a quiet family gath-
ering in the evening.
They have three daughters,
Mrs. Julia Dreyfus of Corpus
Christi, Miss Dorothy Meyers,
who resides with then, and Mrs.
Marie Forsyth of Houston.

touchdown. Then Steve Wagner i
plunged over for the extra two I
points. The Longhorns led 8-6. j
The Owls had scored on a
QB pitchout, Ralph Fain to Kear-
by Swafford for the six. Now
in the second quarter the Owls
were behind 8-6. But the Long-
horns were soon back in the hole
as Swafford swept end for twen-

and Jim Dougherty.
