The boys across the way are
building a tree house; have been
for some time. It is a two-story
tree house, at that. You’ll find a
picture in adjoining columns. They
began the job some time ago, and
periodically over the last six weeks
or so three or four sweating 12-13
year olds would come trooping into
the office and ask if they could
use some of the boards they could
see out behind. Seems they kept
an eye out for trucks leaving things
at The TEXAN in big boxes. Then
they would come over for the lum-
ber.
All boys (and some girls, too)
have built, or should build, a
tree house. Nothing like it for
adventure. The task is fun, and
then comes the time to slip up
there and be alone. Pull up the
ladder, perhaps and be safe
from interferance by, say, the
adult world. We all need to
escape from time to time, kids
especially. They can sit up in
the tree and dream great
dreams before some of the
sterner realities of life catches
up with them.
When I was about that age—just
turning into my teens-—I built a
tree house with some of my friends.
It, too, was high in the air. We
built the tree house because the
tunnel and cave we had so lab-
orously constructed in a seclud-
ed corner of Dr. Threldkeld’s
pasture caved in one day. His best
team of pacers wandered into that
corner and fell through the roof.
The good doctor practically had a
fit!

So we repaired to Brizzie Goo-
kin’s back yard and went to work on
a tree house. We had searched all
over for the best tree, with big,
strong limbs high enough to sup-
port a strong platform and still
allow us to see out over the town
without being seen. It was quite
a search, and the tree in Bizzie’s
back yard was decided upon. From
it we could see the town clock.
The only thing unusual about
the tree house was it was so high
up. Mrs. Gookin was out in the
backyard half a dozen times a
day protesting against it, wam-

Chase Ends
In FoggyDifch
A wild chase at 2 a.m. Wednes-
day, in the fog ended in a ditch in
Fort Bend County. The pursued
was arrested and charged in Judge
Ragans Court with robbery by fire-
arms. The charge was delivered to
Ben Taub hospital where Jack
(John Francis) Sweeney is in fair
condition.
At 2:10 a.m., Nov. 24 a call to
Bellaire Police from Joe Diaz, at-
tendant in the Gulfstationatchim-
ney Rock and Bellaire, reported a
theft. En Route to answer the call,
Officer Wm. Clendennin, heard a
Houston Police Dept, report of a
robbery at Chimney Rock andS.W.
Freeway.
A car of the same description
(’56 Oldsmobile) passed him at
Pine and Chimney Rock.
Both Clendennin and Sgt. Terry
saw the car and turned to follow.
The man took off down Chimney
Rock, then went toward Post Oak
sideswiped a car at Post Oak and
Willowbend. He continued into Fort
Bend county. By now there were
three chasing him, officers said.
Officers saw him throw a gun from
his car into the ditch at Post
Oak and South Loop.
The chase ended at Farm Road
2234 and Lovemont when Sweeney
ran into a dead end, crashed
through the ditch and into a field.
In the heavy fog, Clendennin, close
behind, ran into the rear of Swee-
ney’s car.
Sweeney was removed from the
