Beguiled by sporatic little reports on
the political grass, bright or tarnish-
ed, I'yield to days as a political ob-
server, and daydream on things that
just might come to pass.
In this mood, then, I have noted
several insignificant developments
that when related entrance me.
For instance, I observed idly the
other day I wouldn’t be a bit surprised
if Brother Nixon, playing a wily game,
didn’t come up next year about con-
vention time as “THE man” for the
GOPers.
And the people around the coffee
table appeared thunderstruck, peered
askance as me, and (understatement)
pooh-poohed the idea. All but two,
real old hands at politics, realists who
who have been down the political
road a long way and, incidentally, Re-
publicans.
Later one agreed with this reason-
ing:
1. Richard Nixon is the titular
head of the Republican party as its
last standard bearer, and this des-
pite his ill-fated foray in California.
He is the man chosen by the GOP
last time out, and, whether some like
it or not, he’ll have his say in the
final selection of a GOP nominee.
2. Upon his defeat in California,
Nitfon departed for New York, center
of all things wonderful including big
money, big politicians, big campaign
backers, close to Washington, in the
center of big clusters of electoriaJ
votes.

An Eventful Year Ahead For American
3. Mr. Nixon recently made a little
trip to Europe which, while little
publicized, carries significance. He
followed almost identically in the
footprints of Mr. Kennedy before him.
Frbm reports, not carried to any
extent incidentally in Houston papers,
I gathered the former presidential
candidate received a rousing, if not
royal welcome during his various
stops, especially in West Berlin.
4. Just this Sunday, the press
carried a story from Gettysburg to
the effect that President Eisenhow-
er let it be known through the us-
ually reliable sources that he ex-
pected to have a hand in the se-
lection of his party’s presidential,
nominee next year.
5. Some people think Mr. Eisen-
hower shudders at the thought his
former vice-president might maneu-
ver himself into a favored position
again.

6. The field is wide open at this
early stage of the game despite the
Goldwater surge. For the Arizona
Senator has yet to feel the firm, warm
handclasp of the big electoral vote
“kingmaker” states. Gov. Rockefeller
has fallen by the wayside at least for.

Field Service Students At Bel-High
Before Koussai Abdd-Razzak
of Jordan--and Elsa De Marco of
Uruguay leave Texas next
spring, chances are excellent
that they will know more about
us than we know about our-
selves.
The two American Field Serv-
ice students arrived here last
week—self-possessed and ready
to plunge into a strenuous year
of being a part of the American
soene and learning about it at
the same time.
Next week the two will en-
roll at Bellaire High School
where they will study for eight
months. (A month before school
is out they will leave and go on
a tour of the country along with
other American Field Service
students 'before returning to
their homes).
During their stay here Ameri-
can Field Service members will
go all out to that they learn
as much about how Americans
live, work and play as possible.
They will visit the courts, see
Assistant Principals Added
At Three Area Schools
Assistant principals have been
added to the staffs at three area
schools.
At the last meeting, the Hous-
ton School board approved the
following appoints: Registrar
Ivy Hollister to the position of
assistant principal a,t Bellaire
High and Mrs. Suzon Adam, a
teacher at Reagan. High School,
to the job of assistant principal
at Johnston Junior High, and
Benjamin Freiler, an Oates Ele-
mentary teacher, to assistant
principal of Parker Elementary.
Mr. Hollister served in the
position of acting principal at
Bellaire High from March of
last year until the end of the
■spring term. At that time Mrs.
James G. V. Dee, assistant regis-
trar, took over the duties of act-
ing registrar and is continuing
in that capacity at the present
time.
The -board this year is insti-
gating a policy of hiring two as-
sistant principals for secondary
schools having 2500 or more en-
rollment.
The need for more administra-
tive help in the larger schools
was pointed up in an adminis-
trative survey for secondary
schools made last year under the
direction of Bellaire High Prin-
cipal Harlan Andrews.
Johnston’s new assistant prin-
cipal has taught for the past
ten years at Reagan High School.
She has ibeen in the Houston
School system for 11 years. A
native Houstonian, Mrs. Adam
graduated from Lamar and re-
ceived her bachelors and mas-
ter’s degrees in education from
the University o.f Houston. Her

tour our universities, visit the
Texas Medical Center, visit a
ranch, go to San Antonio for
the Fiesta, visit Sig Flags, and
even ride the Salt Grass Trail.
And they’ve already seen the
Colt .45s play. Judge Roy Hof-
heinz arranged for tickets for
Koussai for Friday night’s game
with the Cardinals and for Elsa
for Monday night’s meeting with
the Braves.
Koussai is making his home
-during his American stay with
the George M. Keith family of
5404 Maple, a fact that the three
Keith youngsters, Morgan, 3,
Edward, 4, and Sam, 11, find
.fascinating.
Mrs. Keith says 16-year-old
Koussai fits right into the fami-
ly group.
“He comes from a family of
six himself and he’s very good
-with the children” she said.
Koussai’s family lives in an
apartment house in Bethlehem.
His father is the assistant direc-
tor of imports and exports for
Jordan. He attends a Catholic
School where classes are held
5 Vfe days a week and the student
load is 11 subjects. Last year—-
his junior year—Koussai1 took

Bellaire Family Escapes Through
Window As Home Burns On Mayfair
A Bellaire family of four
crawled to safety through a bed-
room window when fire en-
gulfed Iheir home at 4536 May-
fair in the early morning hours
Thursday.
Grateful to be alive and
thankful to neighbors and the
Bellaire Police and Fire Depart-
ment are Mr. and Mrs. E. J.
Cloud Jr. and their two children,
Johnny, 14, and Andrea, 11.
A neighbor, Mrs. Ben Dienst,
4538 Mayfair, sounded the alarm
and aTouscd the sleeping family
shortly after midnight. *
Mrs. Dienst said she is usually
a sound sleeper but wakened
quite suddenly around midnight.
“I was aware of the bright
light, looked out the window
and saw the house in flames,”
she said.
Mrs. Dienst awakened her
husband and her eighteen-year-
old granddaughter, Dorothy Hall,
GARBAGE PICK-UP

While Mr. Dienst called the
fire department, Mrs. Dienst and
Dorothy ran next door.
“The doors were on fire so
we banged on the windows and
awakened the Clouds,” Mrs.
Dienst said.
The family crawled to safety
through a bedroom window.
Mrs. Cloud said they were not
awakened 'by the fire because
they were all sleeping in air
conditioned rooms with the doors
closed.
Meanwhile, Dorothy had grab-
bed a garden hose and played
a stream of water over the
Clouds’ car which was parked
close to the flaming garage.
The Bellaire Fire Department
was on the scene in 3% minutes
and in another 45 seconds spray
from one of the high pressure
fog trucks had the blaze under
control.
Fire Chief Glenn Hutchens
■said he had been unable to de-i
lermine the cause of the blaze
w-hic'h burned out the garage
and destroyed the roof. The re-
mainder of the house sustained
smoke damage, he said.
Mrs. Cloud warmly praised
