Cards Spoil
Homecoming
For Falcons
by mike mcconnell
The Bellaire Cardinals spoil-
ed the Falcons homecoming
with a 28-27 comeback victory.
Jones came within a point of
gaining a tie in the last three
minutes of the game.
Trailing 28-13, jones made
two touchdowns in the last three
minutes of the final period of
the game. Sophomore quarter-
back Eddie Howell passed to
end George Cox for one touch-
down and ran eight yards for
the other.
After Howell’s pass to Cox,
the Falcons missed a two point
try which in the end would
have been their win since How-
ell made good on a pass to
end Steve Turnstall with only
seconds remaining in the game.
The Cardinals took the open-
ing kick-off and scored in just
four plays. A 43-yard run by
halfback Dusty Marshall put
the ball on the Jones 19. Mike
Dyess picked up three yards
and then Marshall chalked up
the middle to score with just
1:24 gone in the game.
Bellaire’s quarterback Ron-
nie Newhouse kicked four extra
points.
With 7:50 to play in the first
half, George Cox got his first
TD by blocking a punt from
Richard Smith and pouncing
on the ball in the end zone.
Jones gained a 13-7 halftime
advantage when halfback
Bobby McClure intercepted a
pass at the Bellaire 40 and
returned it to the 16.
Three plays later quarter-
back Weems Turner passed to
halfback Leon Albarado at the
nine and the latter ran on for
the score.
Bellaire rebounded quickly
in the third quarter, taking the
second half kick-off and march-
ing 52 yards with Dusty Mar-
shall scoring from the eight.
Early in the fourth quarter
Bellaire’s quarterback Ronnie
Newhouse climaxed a 7 1-yard
drive by passing 19 yards to
Alan Barvin.
Tackle Chuck Ehrhardt re-
covered a fumble at the Falcon
1 and on the next play fullback
Mike McConnell plunged over.
Dusty Marshall led all ball
carriers with 125 yards in 19
carries.

The amazing Lamar Red-
skins turned on a second half
rally to down the crippled West-
bury Rebels 16-0, Thursday
night at Dyer Stadium.
The Rebels out played the
winners in the first half as they
saw three strong drives die deep
in Lamar territory. Quarter-
back Rusty Clark hit constantly
on short passes only to see
Lamar stop thedrives on fourth
down.
The tables turned in the sec-
ond half as Lamar scored two
touchdowns and a shaky safety.
Lamar didn’t waste any time
as they took the second half
kick off at the 29 and moved
71 yards in 12 plays. Quarter-
back David Brown carried the
final yard to paydirt, Roger
Leinert added the extra point
with 6:06 left in the third period.
Early in the fourth quarter
Lamar picked up a safety when
Clark was separated from the
ball while trying to pass out
of his end zone. The Rebels
had just stopped Lamar on the
Condit Takes
2-0 Thriller
From Gordon
BY CLIFF WILKIE
Condit squeaked past Gor-
don in a hair raising 2-0 victory
last Friday night. The crowd
was kept on the edge of its
seats as both teams came with-
in inches of the others goal
many times during the long,
hard fought game.
Gordon started off the game
by kicking off to Condit. A Con
dit player fumbled the ball and
.John Garner recovered for Gor-
don on the Condit 30 yard line.
Four plays later Gordon was
forced to kick, but Condit fum-
bled the kick and Gordon re-
covered again, this time on the
C’ondit 20. Condit soon got
control of the ball again when
Alan Liss intercepted a Gordon
pass on their own 25 and ran
ten yards up to the 35 yard
line.
Gordon got the ball after the
Condit fourth down, but they
couldn’t keep it and they had to
kick. The slippery fingered Con-
dit halfbacks fumbled again
and Gordon recovered on the
Condit 20 yard line.
Then Gordon’s Tommy
Green brought the crowd to its
feet by running 11 years to the
Condit 9 yard line. Backed up
against their own goal, the Con-
dit defense held for four plays
on their own 9. The Condit
offense then took over after the
fourth down.
The Condit team came to life
and moved the ball down to the
Gordon 20 in several quick
plays. Condit’s Jerry de Jean
started the drive by running
30 yards to the Condit 40. Sev-
eral plays later, Hen rev ('.lass
broke away and ran 20 yards
to the Gordon 21 yard line.
Condit kept pounding away
at the Gordon line and had
moved the ball to the Gordon
9 when the first half ended.
Soon after the second half
started, the Condit defense nail-
ed the Gordon quarterback be-
hind the goal for the only score
in the game. The rest of the
game was a stalemate with nei-
ther team being able to move
the ball.
one yard line when Westbury
took over the ball and tried to
pass from the end zone.
Late in the game Redskin
Corby Robertson snagged a
Clark pass and returned it 55
yards for Lamar’s final score.
Leinert again kicked the extra
point.
Next week the Rebels take on
Austin in a very crucial Zone I
game. Both Austin and West-
bury need a win to stay in
contention for the xone crown.
