astic audience that smells of new-
mown hay; and is finally pur-
chased, through some clever mach-
inations on the part of the above-
merjtfoned trio, by the producer
who turned it down in the first
place.
The screenplay by Gertrude Pur-
cell and Benny Rubin has enough
comedy for three good pictures,
and the direetion by Edward N.
Buzzell, who has a knack for this
sort of thing, leaves no gag un-
turned. People who are not al-
lowed to laugh should stay away
from 'The Girl Friend.’’ That’s
a tip.
At The Liberty
A week of top pictures opens at
the Liberty starting tonight with
“Of Human Bondage,” starring
Leslie Howard and Bette Davis. One
of the best pictures of the year, it
is the most dramatic show In which
Howard or Miss Davis have yet ap-
peared. “Of Human Bondage”
shows Wednesday (tonight) only
and it’s certainly a picture you
can’t afford to miss. Also comedy.
And here is Spencer Tracy in
“The Murder Man,” an action filled
picture showing Thursday and Fri-
day with Virginia Bruce in the fem-
inine lead. A mystery show is al-
ways entertaining but this picture
has a most unusual plot to keep you
excited until the dramatic climax.
A murder is committed but; circum-
stances surrounding the event are
so vague that even the police are
baffled until a reporter uncovers
several “hot” leads. The right man
is supposedly found and convicted
but at the last minute the real mur-
I derer confesses and believe me, it
j will be one big surprise when you
| really find out who is “The Murder
Man.” Also news and comedy.

their heads over her for she’s the
favorite, “Girl Friend.” Ann Soth-
ern, lovely blond beauty of a dozen
hit pictures, is tops again in this
all singing, dancing now musical
hit!
Showing Thursday and Friday
nights of this week, “The Girl
Friend,” with Roger Pryor and Jack
Haley in the supporting cast, is one
of the best light comedy pictures
of the season.
Miss Sotherit playing the title
role is a farmer’s daughter who
doesn’t let the city slickers fool her
—much! Pryor, an out of work
hoofer, comes to her farmhouse pre-
tending to be a producer interested
in a play written by her brother,
Jack Haley.
Miss Sothern demands a try-out
be held of her brother’s marvelous
production, which turns out to be
a ilop and Pryor substitutes his
own play that he has written.
Complications come thick and
fast from the moment the farm-
yard animals stampede back into
the barn-theatre on opening night
to get in out of the rain until the
supposed tragedy is later enacted
by Miss Sothern, Haley, Pryor and
others; is received by an enthusi-
