Mayfair residence
The conversation ran mainly on

wnil sunlight and. In many caaes.

with the prevention and cure of
dttaeasr* <2> The Importance of
dieting In relation to life longevity
The great surgeon was particular-
ly emphatic In hia reply to recent
criticism of the rays:
"Poeliivriy amasingl" he exclaim-
ed. and added:
To aay that Ute ultra-violet rays
ere no use la Irmomprehenalble To
way that the ray* which benetitted

placed by mustard plaster la ridicul-
ous In the extreme It Is a mistake

"And, Incidentally, where la It aug-

placed in order to benefit our Ilia?
"Man needs a certain amount of

In many rases the so-called arilflcl-

fer an excellent substitute "
Then he added "But people hale
new things
Emphasising the importance of
preventative medicine. Sir Arbuih-
not read aloud an extract from an
article of his In "The Golden Health
Library", a health encyclopedia In
magawne form which the surgeon
has just founded
"The underlying conception of
this work." he said, "la that good
health can be attained and preserv-
ed by ascertained principles of liv-

madteal profession, nor la It to he
found In specifics and prescriptions
Modern civilisation ta obsessed by
the disease complex, and medicine,
which la dominated at least aa much
as other professions by the state of
public opinion, la still unable to
think Itself away from that false
and Injurious attitude towards Its
function.
"The physician aa healer' still
carries the strongest popular appeal
Yet It cannot be denied that It Is
the phystrian as preventer of Uls‘
who Will be the doctor of the
future,"
Asked how long he believed men
should be able to live If they took
care of themselves, Sir Arbuthnol
replied;
"The duration of a mans life la
comimrable to the length of life of
an automobile. U depends largely
upon the use which Is made of It
and the care that la bestowed upon
It." %
