THE WESTERNER WORLD

ATTEND
THE
LHS
BASKETBALL
GAMES
Santa (ZCcuta., *) Tteed . . .
By CAROL CROMER
Dwayne Key has been chosen
Westerner of the Week. He re-
ceived this honor on the basis of
constant effort and for his show
in offensive and defensive play,
according to Coach Max O’Banion.
. Serving as president of Morn-
ing Watch, Dwayne makes honor
roll grades and is a member of the
National Honor Society, the “L”
Association, and El Club Pan
Americano.
The Westerners suffered a dis-
appointing loss to Lakeview last*
weekend in the Snyder Tourna-
ment. The loss, however* will not
mar their season record too badly.
The record, as of Tuesday after-
noon, read seven wins and three
]osses. LHS journeyed to Big
Spring to meet 4he strong Steers
Tuesday night.
Lubbock will play host to
Odessa and Midland this weekend
and then take a breather until
Dec. 30 when they meet Abilene
here. Odessa and Midland, both
AAAA teams, are strong and dan-
gerous.
District play for the Westerners
begins January 7 when they host
the Plainview Bulldogs. There
will be a strong race for the Dis-
trict 3-AAAA title. Borger has
been selected as the team to beat
for the title.
The Westerners will be in the
thick of the fight if they continue
to work and improve.
Football will be in the spotlight
during the holidays as some of the
top football teams in the nation
clash in the annual bowl games.
Last year my bowl game predic-
tions all proved to be right, so I’ll
try again this year. In the grand-
daddy of them all, the Rose Bowl,
I’ll take Ohio over Oregon. Okla-
homa should come through over
Duke in the Orange Bowl. The
Cotton Bowl will probably be the
outstanding game of them all. I’ll
pick Navy over Rice. The Sugar
Bowl and the Gator Bowk will
both be close contests. I’ll stick
with Texas teams and take Texas
over Mississippi in the Sugar
Bowl and Texas A&M over Ten-
nessee in the Gator Bowl.
Merry Christmas and Happy
New Year to all Westerners.
Be sure that one of your New
Year’s resolutions is to attend all
Westerner functions.

Boys' Physical Education
classes are beginning a round-
robin tournament of volleyball,
according to coach James
Owens. Each class will de- -
termine a winning team, and
these teams will vie for the
school championship.

Three-Year Letterman Chosen For Honor
From
and
Across From School
Besides being actively involved
in these clubs and basketball,
Dwayne is enrolled in English,
history, math, and Spanish.
During the summer months he
adds swimming to his favorite
sport of basketball. He attributes
his playing ability, fnodestly, to
constant practice and effort.
In his position as guard, Dwayne
is high scorer for the Westerners.
He is a three-year letterman.
