Cardozo and Maimonides joint dinner to Bipartisan Texas delegation
support 2009 United Jewish Campaign requests funds for Port of Houston
Registration is closing soon for
the annual Cardozo Society and
Maimonides Society dinner event,
hosted by the Jewish Federation
of Greater Houston. This year, in
light of the economic situation, the
societies will hold one combined
event on Monday, March 30, at the
InterContinental Houston Hotel,
2222 West Loop South. The evening
will begin with cocktails at 6:30
followed by a 7 p.m. dinner. The
fundraising dinner will support the
2009 United Jewish Campaign.
The Cardozo event chairs are
Marc E. Grossberg and Harry C.
Susman, and the Maimonides event
chair is Dr. Jacob Varon.
The dinner will include enter-
tainment by comedian Joel
Chasnoff, who has performed in
seven countries and is known for
his innovative, experience-based,
positive Jewish humor. He has played
the Montreal Comedy Festival, a
USO Comedy Tour of Japan and
Korea entertaining American troops,
Jewish and corporate events across
North America and Europe and
hundreds of college and club dates
nationwide. Information about
Chasnoff is available at www.
joelchasnoff.com.
The Cardozo Society is named for
the late United States Supreme Court
Justice Benjamin Cardozo, who
was appointed in 1932 by President
Herbert Hoover to fill the seat of
Oliver Wendell Holmes. Cardozo was
the second Jewish Supreme Court
justice.
The Maimonides Society is named
for Moses Maimonides, a rabbi,
physician and philosopher during
the Middle Ages. His works and
views are considered a cornerstone
of Jewish thought and study.
Membership for the Cardozo and
Maimonides societies requires a
suggested minimum tax-deductible
contribution of $1,000 to the
Federation’s Annual Campaign for
lawyers and doctors, respectively,
ages 36 and older; or $500 for ages
35 and younger.
For reservations and tickets, as
well as information on becoming
a member of the Cardozo Society
or Maimonides Society, contact

WASHINGTON - Rep. Gene Green,
joined by a bipartisan group of members
of the Texas delegation, sent a letter to
Paul Woodley, assistant secretary for
civil works of the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers, asking for $103.47 million for
projects in the Houston Ship Channel.
Recently, the U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers received $4.6 billion
as part of the American Recovery
and Reinvestment Act for navigation
projects. The letter asks that $103.47
million be sent to the Port of Houston
for investments in its infrastructure.
“Since there were no earmarks in
ARRA, we encourage the Corps of
Engineers to include the Houston Ship
Channel’s projects when awarding
ARRA funding,” Green said. “The Port
of Houston is responsible for 785,000
jobs and more than $117.6 billion
in economic impact, and federal
investment will continue to support
these jobs and commerce.”
Reps. Pete Olson, John Culberson,
A1 Green, Ted Poe, Sheila Jackson Lee,
Kevin Brady, Michael McCaul, Ron
Paul, John Carter, Chet Edwards and
Ciro Rodriguez joined Rep. Green in
signing the letter.
The Port of Houston ranks first in
foreign tonnage and U.S. imports. The
U.S. Coast Guard estimates that a one-
month closure of a port like Houston
would cost the national economy $60
billion.
“The federal government is
responsible for maintaining the Port of
Houston, and there are projects ready to
go that qualify for funding. The Houston
Ship Channel is a vital component of
our regional and national economy,
and funding these projects will be a
worthwhile investment,” Green said. □
