ty of Gaines, State of Texas.

To C. L. Murf:
You are hereby notified that the un-
dersigned Jury of Freeholders, ap-
pointed by the Commissioners' Court
of Gaines County, Texas, to lay out,
survey and assess damages resulting
from the establishment of a Public
Road, upon the Court’s own motion,
and others, beginning at the north-
west corner of Section No. 189, in
Block G, being the Seminole Town
Section, in Gaines County, Texas,
and terminating at the State line on
the route between Seminole, county
seat o Gaines County, Texas, and
Lovington. county seat of Lea County,
New Mexico, will on the 13th day of
September, A. D. 1918, in discha-ge
f f our said duty, mi’.eet upon the fol-
lowing premises, to which you
have some claim or title, to-wit.

Block G, Gaines County Texas,
and will then and there proceed to
lay out such road ane assess the dam-
ages incidents1 to the opening of
same to which you may be entitled
on account of the laying out of said
Public Road, and you are hereby re-
quested and required to produce to us
a statement in writing of the dam-
ages claimed by you. if any, inciden-
tal to the opening of said road, and
all evidences which you may desire to
offer in relation to such damages, and
do and perform suen other acts as
may be necessary and lawful- in the
premises.

A government survey is now being
made of the legnite deposits in Brazos
county.
The city tax rate of Brenh&m has
been fixed at $1.15 on the $100 valua-
tion, the same as last year.

The fortieth annual convention of
the Texas Sheriffs’ Association was
held in Galveston this week.

The drouth holds unabated in Mills
county, as the county has not been
thoroughly wet in forty months.

The tax rate for Dallas has been fix-
ed at $1.95 on the $100 valuation, the
highest in the history of the city.

Oil has been struck in Zapata coun-
ty sixty miles southeast of Laredo,
near the Texas-Mexican boundary line.

Over six hundred head of cattle
were put through the tick-killing vats
at two points in Washington county
last week.

operation at Alvin. Alvin is in the fig
belt, midway between Houston and

well being bored on a farm near
Blanco this week. The oil was found
at a depth of 536 feet.

the drouth, fall peaches are dropping
from the trees in the Palestine vicim
ity, and the crop will he short.
A branch bureau of the war risk In-
surance bas been established in Dal-
las. The branch bureau will cover
Ihree states—Arkansas, Oklahoma and
Texas.

A campaign against i ice in Dallas
is to be waged by Mayor Lajvther and
the city commissioners in co operation
with federal and state authorities and
army officers.

Steps to provide against an acute
water shortage at Ranger and other
oil fields in that vicinity have been
taken and water will be piped from the
Brazos river to the fields.

Mrs. John R. Banister, widow of the
late sheriff, John It. Banister of Cole-
man county, has been appointed to fill
the unexpired term of her husband,
who died serving his second term.
The sheep and goat raisers of Brown
county are preparing to wage an or-
ganized warfare on wolves and other
animals which depredate upon the
flocks of the county. They will em-
ploy government trappers for a few
months.

Owing to the strong opposition of
many people of Comal county, owners
of the proponed site of the state leper
colony, situated on the Guadalupe
river in the upper part of the county,
have asked that the contract of sale be
abrofated. _
The first tax roll for 1918 received
at the comptroller's department was
from Bandera county, and shows a to-
tal valuation of $2,615,265, which is an
increase of $24,850 over last year. The
first tax roll received last year was
from Burnet county.
Many cattlemen in the drouth-strick-
en districts of Texas are preparing to
rush their herds to fresh, green graz-
ing grounds in Louisiana, Georgia,
Florida and other States east of the
Mississippi, thus taking advantage of
the shipping rate for stock cattle from
Texas to the Southeast, Just granted
by the United States railroad commis-
sion.
Texas during the year 1917 produced
approximately 32,000,000 barrels of
crude oil valued at approximately $50,-
000,000. During the first quarter of
1918 Texas produced more than 7,360,-
000 barrels of oil, valued at more than
$11,800,000. The increase in produc-
tion came largely from North Texas,
and ft is estimated that at least $20,- !
000,000 will be spent within the near
future in developing what is called the
Centrai-West Texas fields.
