COAL IS HIGH IN CHIU.
Soft coal sells in Chili at about
$25 a ton, although the cost of its
production is said to be about $5 a
ton at the most. The deficit in the
earnings of the railways is attributed
-to the high price of coal. There
the four big coal companies which
heretofore worked the mines of soft
coal in Aranco province have lately
combined. The coal production of
Chili amounts to about 2,000,000
tons a year, while the country needs
3,000,000 tons. The coal deposits of
Chili are said barely to have been
touched owing to lack of capital.
SOVEREIGN REMEDY.
At a training camp in Georgia a
recruit of two weeks’ experience was
on his first trick of guard. His part
was a water tank. His orders were
to call the corporal of the guard if
the tank should overflow.
All was quiet until 1 a. m., when
the camp was aroused by a shrill
call:
“Corporal of the guard—No. 6—
bring a cork!”—Home Sector. •
