In the long and disheartening list
of those who have finished then
eaithly pilgi image during the last
monthi in this section of the county,
the men, the stronger sex, exceeded
the other by fat, but llod 1^ no re
specter of persons, and lit His holy
will u I so the other sex must follow
His summons in due time. One of
them has been selected for His con-
sideration and we do her the last
honors today with h sad heart hut a
firm conviction that all is well. An
invalid for years, spending the eve
of her life almost exclusively in the
confines of her home, surrounded by
love and kindness, getting ready for
her final exit, yet wide awake in
sympathetic attitude for whatevei
transpired in her community and in
the w rid at large. Thus we remem-
ber Mrs. Paul Oefinger.
Maria Hauser, her maiden name
had her cradle ami spent her youth
in the fertile and romantic country
of Suabin, and retained those happy
impressions to the last. She was
born at Aldingen, then in the king
dom of Wuei t'-mberg. Germany, one
of those quaint, antique hamlets that
invites the palette of the artist and
the vivid vision of the poet for the
background of their creative work
and appeals to youth in a thousand
voices. Her parents were owners of
a mill and the rhythmic cadence of
the old mill-wheel, driven by the rip-
pling waters, day and night, was mu-
sic that never lost its fascination for
lads and lassies, villagers and ro-
mancers, loitering wayfarers and
passing knights errant alike. It still
rang in the ears of our departed
friend. There she was brought to
the I»rd in holy baptism, there she
received a thorough schooling, there
she got her impressive instruction in
the things of faith and Christian liv-
ing, there she was confirmed and ]
started out in life, to build on a good j
foundation. Days never forgotten.
Born on November the 17tn, 1806
sh» stayed in the home country till'
August 1886, when adverse rondi->
tions induced their mother, now wid-
ow id, and four children to emigrate*
into this country. Here Maria ap
plied herself in various ways, now in
Hondo, then at San Antonio, until
Paul Oefinger chose her for his life-
companion. They were coupled by
Rev. J. F rehm r on November 17, her j
birthday, 1888, and made their home 1
at Film Creek and, after a few
i changes to and fro, at Upper Quihi,
where she spert the remainder of her j
I life in happiness, fidelity and true'
co-operative spirit, in the course of
time giving birth to five children and ;
being an ideal mother with rare un-
de (.standing for then needs and pray- j
erfully, with untiling patience, at-
tending to their cares and problems
and always reserving ample time and
| consideration for her many friends. |
With 1 cr husband she joined the
Lutheran church at Quihi scon after
their marriagi and retained her mem-
bership to the end, joining in every
noble enterprise and giving the best j
! of her character and ability without j
evasion. The word of God was the j
light on her way and the house of
the Lord her favorite abode. For ■
many years she served in various of-
ficial positions for the Indies’ Aid
and gave unstinted support to their
endeavors and never cancelled hei
' membership, though deprived from
attendance by her ailing condition.
She was really hungering and thirst-
ing for the righteousness of God and
was deeply appreciative for the min-
istrations of her pastor who spent
many an hour near her invalid chair
where tears and cheers mingled un-
der prayer and devotion.
Perhaps never overly strong, she I
was in fairly good health, though in- I
terruptions now and then occurrd I
that beclouded their home, hut about
seven years ago a paralytic stroke
impaired her energy in various ways
| and severed her outward relations
considerably. Her strength was on
the decline from then on and the out-
look became more serious. latter on
the mobility of her limbs was almost
completely arrested. Still later she j
1 was bedfast, though never losing j
j courage and faith and her friendly,
sincere smile. A week ago another
stroke portending an early dissolu-
tion. Medical care and utmost atten-
tion were of little avail. During the j
last days she lapsed into unconscious-
ness interspersed with lucid moment-
of short duration. Under thi* prayers
of liei pastor and suriounded by her
children and many friends, she
breathed her last on Monday, March
the nth, 116)7, at an age of 70 years.
It months and 11 Hays.

The funcial service was on Wed-

Merger lunernl home, with interment
at the New Quihi Cemetery. Rev.
