thts is our 9rst Christmas together
. . . and it'* sort of lonesome out here
In the country."
Sally was twenty-three. She and
Erie had been married a little less than
■ year. Knr months they had s;e u-
lated on the lost way to spend Christ-
mas together. At first they had de-
cided to go to New York, on'r so
miles away, have dinner, go to the
theater and then some exciting night
club. But gradu-
ally tli discov-
ered that they were
mot as interested
In celebrating the
holiday In this
manner: Sally and
Eric had been to
plenty of dinners,
plenty of dances
and plenty of night
clubs. They w ere
a bit fed up. After
considerable argu-
ment and trying to
find out what the
other really want-
, ed, they came to
'A the grand conclu-
slon that they
would get n thrill out of Christina* at
home in tlii-ir little house In the noin
try.
“No party,” said Krlc.
“No guests,-’ chimed In Sally.

They had shaken hands soleiuulj ou
this.
They liad talked over the dinner
which Sally was to prepare herself
(the tnuld having hep ed to be let of.
to go to her family for the day). The;,
had decided on the kind of Christina:,
tree they wanted: Uric had gone out
two days ago and chopped It down.
They hail trimmed It with the glitter
of make-believe Icicles and silver-blue
lights. They had shopped furiously,
buying quantities of jokes and silly
presents. These two young things,
very much in love and full of zest and
ifltas swept awnv the more obvious
entertainments In one gesture. They j
were as excited as children.
Then at 2:00 o'clock of the after- |
noon the dHy before Christmas, while
trie was chuckling to himself over 1
(one ridiculous gift he was wrapping
up for Sally, the telephone rang.
Eric talked very hurriedly Into the
transmitter. And I11 a low tone Sally
could hardly hear what he said. When
he hung up the reviver be announced
that he must leave for town al once.
“But why?" asked Sally.
"Well," he hesitated, “you see I've
got to meet Lena. She's Jusi coine.”
“Lena! Who In the world Is she?"
■ally's voice became a bit edgy.
