About tuur miles south of Bremond can be seen the remains of
o it of the most popular health resorts in the South—Wooten Wells,
inn. ;;o and 4o years ago, was the assembling place for chivalry,
vealth, splendor, youth and age, as well as the sick and palsied—
al! met here at thi- veritable fountain posscsing the power of re-
storing youth, like the old Spanish explorer, Ponce de Leon. The

d *ys thi covered wagon” was the popular mode of transportation
• nr caravans of them could be seen slowly wending their way to-
ward this Mecca in the summer—people on a vacation jaunt, ’ihen,
o.ie by one, other places sprang into prominence, and the surging
humanity drifted to other places and before many years Wooten
\\ ells was a totering ruin.
Iats go ahead and tell it all. Let’s inform a goggle-eyed world
that the reason why Wooten Wells failed a-- a prosperous watering
place was because it didn’t advertise. There are scores of curative
springs which once had more than local celebrity, but which failed to
realize the hopes of their friends, and lack of advertising was respon-
sible. Consider the well-advertised resorts, how they have grown
and expanded and been resorted to by thousands annually. Every
one of them became famous through the medium of publicity.
Atlantic ( ity is in fact one of the poorest places for a summer
resort on the Atlantic coast, but advertising has made it a play-
ground for literal millions. There is a place on the east coast of
F ,'orida called Hollywood—a poor selection of a name, considering
the priority of the California Hollywood-—-which is advertising
so extensively that it is actually drawing tourists to Florida in the
summer time. Newport, N. J., used to be the summer society capital
of the Lnited Ftates. Rut Newport became se'f-assured. disdainful
of publicity and haughty of spirti. Result—millionaires’ palaces
built there a few years ago are for rent at poor mens prices, ihe
only thing that can be sold profitably without advertising is bootleg
liquot. But look at the kind of people the dealer has to deal with.
