Curds Rebound To
Capture Bi-District
By GREG WATSON
While slowly preparing the
field for batting practice, Bel-
laire’s head baseball coach, Ray
Knoblauch, speaking in a somber
tone, with tinges of admiration
cleverly disguised, commented,
“Many teams wouldn’t comeback
after the breaks we received.”
After being tagged with an
opening, 1-0 loss, Bellaire’s
baseball varsity battled back to
grab two games and walk off
with the bi-district Champion-
ship against Sharpstown last
week.
Three times the Cards’ title
hopes flickered and three times
they came through.
In game number 1, w\th one
out and runners on first and
third, Robert Johnson hit what
appeared to be a game-tying
grounder, but Jim Gidieon, at-
tempting to break up the double
play barrelled into the second
baseman. The umpire called in-
terference and the run was void-
ed.

MAJOR BERNARD FREELAND, USAF Academy Liaison Officer,
5112 Huisache, presented Civil Air Patrol Cadet Colonel Mike Mc-
Clendon, 7907 Braesdale, Bayou City Composite Squadron, with a
Certificate of Appointment to the Air Academy Class of 75, at
Monday nights regular meeting at the Bellaire Methodist Church.
McClendon is the second from Bayou City Squadron to be appointed
to the Academy. Brian Jones was the first and is now completing
his second year in Denver.
Bellaire’s Planning and Zon-
ing Commission met with resi-
dents last week at a prelimenary
public hearing to discuss possi-
ble changes in the zoning ordi-
nance which may bring more
townhouses to Bellaire.
The following changes for Bel-
laire’s R-5 zones have been pro-
posed:
1. Article 8-102A. The mini-
mum lot size requirement is now
2200 square feet. The proposed
change would amend this to a
minimum lot size of 1800 square
feet for a two story townhouse
and keep the requirement of2200
square feet for a one story town-
house.
2. Article 13-106. One section
of this article reads: ‘‘Before be-
coming entitled to abuildingper-
mit.” The proposal would change
the wording to ‘‘before becoming
Then in the second game, after
committing twoerrorsand allow-
ing an unearned run in the first
inning, Steve Niemann stroked
a two-run double and the Cards
went on to win.

entitled to a certificate of oc-
cupancy,” and would allow devel-
opment of subdivisions in phases.
3. Article 8-301A. The present
lot depth requirementandhaveno
minimum depth requirement
Both minimum depth and width
dimensions are specified in the
existing ordinance. The new law
would keep the requirement of a
22 foot minimum width and would
state that the remaining dimen-
sion be such that it at least met
the 1800 square foot require-
ment.
4. Article 8-401A. This pre-
sently specifies that there may
not be more than 50% coverage of
a lot. The proposal would change
this to the restriction that a
house may not cover more than
80% of the property.
C.E. Stinnett, acting chairman
for Roy Mazzagatti, spoke in fa-
vor of the proposed changes. “We
re zoned sections of Bellaire to R-
5 zones 18 months ago and to this
time we’ve had no takers,” he
said. “Part of this is because of
the economy but a good part of
it is also our minimum lot depth
requirement and the 50% lot cov-
erage we call for. 80% lot cov-
erage is enough, 50% is not."
Art Raney, 5212 Aspen, also
spoke in favor of the changes,
calling them concrete and real-
istic.
