against women’s teams. All
games were played full court
with five players (boys’
rules), which will be requir-
ed in both public and paroch-
ial interscholastic competi-
tion for girls beginning next
season.
Team honors included
championships in both the
Willow Meadows Baptist
Church League and their
post season tournament.
The girls were also cham-
pions of the Greater Hous-
ton Teen Girls Basketball
League and the Gulf Coast
Services Association league.
The only loss incurred in the
three leagues was by one
point.
Several members of the
Holy Ghost team would have
been outstanding high sc-
hool players if the Houston
Independent School District
had offered girls’ basketball
as a sport under the Title 9
federal guidelines set six
years ago in 1972. Title 9
provides that girls and boys
receive the same educational
opportunities (including
physical education and ath-
□etics). Failure to offer the
sport has deprived Houston
girls of the opportunity to
obtain college scholarships
offered to girls having ex-
ceptionsl basketball skills
and ability, since indepen-
dent and church teams are
relatively unknown. College
scouts naturally look to the
high schools supporting
girls’ basketball in seeking
recruits. The limited num-
ber of independent and
church basketball programs
offers little hope for girls to
develop their basketball sk-
ills sufficiently to compete in
college basketball. Many
other Texas towns and cities
(Dallas included) support
girls’ basketball, some of
them for many years past.
Members of the Holy
Ghost team were Annie
Muniz, Cathy Jackson, Su-
zanne Mino, Monica Little,
Glenda Ivey, Jody Douzat,
Karen Guerrero, Mary Ellen
Widacki, Cindy Averyt,
Mary Beth Jamail, Patricia
Cooley, Julie Arbuthot and
Cindy Faszholz.
Leading scorers were
Mary Beth Jamail (422 poi-
nts-25 games), Mary Ellen
Widacki (434 points-26 ga-
mes), Annie Muniz (237
points-19 games) and Monica
Little (304 points-38 games).
