Cards Doing Well In Tourney
CASEY AT BAT, Wouldn’t stand a chance against these guys. Pic-
tured with Ray Knoblauch, coach of Bellaire High School’s baseball
team are Craig Hodges (1.) and Jim Gideon. Hodges pitched a no-
hitter in the Houston Tournament against Kashmere and Gideon
earned the honor against Aldine in the Bellaire Tournament.
By GREG WATSON
Craig Hodges’ dangling curve-
ball dazzled Kashmere,8-0, Fri-
day, as the junior lefthander’s
16-strikeout, no-hit whitewash
enabled Bellaire’s baseball var-
sity to finish a perfect 5-0 week
of play.
For Hodges, fruitless in two
previous outings, it was sweet
victory. For Bellaire, after drop-
ping a doubleheader two week-
ends ago, the triumphs put them
back in the running.
CARDS GAINING ON APPOLOS
Meanwhile, Bellaire Tourna-
ment victor Sharpstown, consid-
ered one of the top Houston
schoolboy teams, slipped while
losing two contests (Westchest-
er, 12-4; Madison, 3-2). At the
moment, both the Caids and the
Apollos have 10-3 season marks.
When all tabulations had been
made, last year’s state finalists
had defeated Pasadena, 5-2; Wal-
trip, 2-1; Kashmere, 8-0; Scar-
borough, 5-1; and St. Thomas,
7-1.

BELLAIRE BLAZES IN
TOURNEY
Appropriately, the latter three
victories came in the all-impor-
tant Houston Coaches Tourna-
ment, which will be completed
Thursday through Saturday.
Friday, 4 p.m., DELMAR, the
Cards will play either Lee, Bel-
laire JV, or St. Thomas. If vic-
torious then, they will go back
Saturday, 1 p.m., DELMAR, to
play the Butler division champs.
The championship is scheduled
for Saturday, 7 p.m., ST. PIUS.
GIDEON, FRANK-
STATISTICAL STANDOUTS
Although Walt rip broke his
shutout at 23 innings, Jim Gide-
on still leads Cardinal hurlers
with a 5-0 record and .388 ERA.
As far as strikeouts are con-
cerned, the 6*2” junior has been
averaging nearly one per inning,
whiffing 37 in 36 innings.
Offensively, Steve Frank heads
batters with a torrid .361 avg.
Frank’s 4 doubles, 1 homer, 12
RBI’s, and 28 times on base are
tops in those categories. Bel-
laire's only other .300 hitter is
Alan McMurtrey, whose 27 times
on base, 7 RBI's, and .318 avg.
is the squad's second best.
KNOBLAUCH PLEASED
When this year’s varsity as-
sembled to begin practice, one
could easily see the apprehen-
siveness on Coach Ray Knobl-
augh's worried face.
His two pitchers who carried
95 percent of the loas last year
had graduated. And to top that,
school re-zoning had just trans-
ferred his only senior pitcher to
Sharpstown
This left Knoblauch with a
pitching staff of juniors that had
never thrown a ball in varsity ac-
tion.
So far, however, the Cards
have fared well. Commenting on
his team’s progress, Coach Kno-
blauch had this to say: "We’re
definitely improving. The pitch-
ing has been excellent, and now
the hitting is beginning to pick
up. Maybe we can win it this
year.”
Who knows? Number two tries
harder!
