No Point In Working Standing If One Can
Sit, Says Portrait Artist
Painter Prefers Photos
To Living Models
Portrait subjects run in trends,
I according to Jane B. Waddill of
C539 Vanderbilt. When she started
the work, she was with her hus-
band, Gregg C. Waddill, Jr., who
was stationed in Key West, Flori-
da, as a lieutenant in the Navy.
Then, all the Navy wives want-
ed portraits of their husbands in
uniform. Now, with the war over,
all the parents want paintings of
their children.
Strangely enough, Naval offi-
cers in war time and children in
peace time have one thing in com-
mon, says Mrs. Waddill, neither
of them can very well sit for their
portraits. In the first place, the
whereabouts of a service man on
active duty was unpredictable.
Second, the chances of keeping a
small child still long enough for
the artist to observe his features
and characteristics is even more
nearly impossible.
That, for one thing, determined
Mrs. Waddill to work from photo-
graphs rather than requiring the
subject to sit for long periods. She
considers water colors more diffi-
cult and attractive than oil paint-
ings but works in both mediums.
One of her favorite paintings
is of Mr. Waddill, clad in berib-
boned dress whites and staring
sternly into the room. Naturally,
it’s a watercolor.
Accompanies Photographer
To get a working photograph,
the painter accompanies a profes-
sional photographer to the home
of her subject. From 10 or 12
shots, she asks the family to
choose one for her to use as a
model for the painting.
Then, in between taking care
of the Vanderbilt Street house, in-
to which the Waddills moved in
February, rearing their pre-school
son, Gregg, and working in philan-
thropic and gardening phases of
Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority,
she retires to the back room (soon
to become a full-fledged studio)
where she does her painting. This
is the main reason she favors pho-
tographs instead of sittings.
Painting as a sidelight to home-
making can come in handy in more
ways than one, she says. The day
preceding a meeting in her home
of the Kappa’s garden group, she
hastily painted several floral pic-
tures to hang in the various
rooms.
Mrs. Waddill, orginally of Gal-
veston, studied art in the island
city under Paul Schumann, who
died several years ago. She at-
tended the University of Texas,

Have you ever wondered why all artists are pictured standing at
their easels? So has Mrs. Gregg C. Waddill, Jr. of 6539 Vanderbilt,
who also is an artist. Mrs. Waddill, who paints portraits using
photographs for models instead of requiring sittings, does the
sitting herself. Photo by Peter Whitney

Further training came in Chi-

Exhibited At Museum
The young artist has hung one
of her paintings, “Indian Village,’’
ut the Museum of Fine Arts. In
her mind, it is distinguished by
the facts that it is composed of
somber tones and that her husband
doesn’t like it.
“But he likes the idea of my j
painting in general,” she hastily I
interjected. “It certainly saved me i
from boredom while he was study-1
ing at night to be a certified pub-!

turns out, is an “un-painter.” He |
