The Development of Our Railway Net in Texas.
By Waltek Splaw.v, Railroad Commissioner of Texas
(continued from last week.)
This land was to be sold one- raj|roa(}
in Texas lias continued until *ve
now have about 16,000 miles of
half in six years and all of it in
twelve years. Under this law
67 companies were chartered
and 12 of them obtained land.
Prom 1852 to 1882, 41 railroad
companies received land blocks
from 49,000 acres to 5,167,000
acres. The total given railroads
amounted to 38,900.800 acres
Just what this land brought
no one has ascertained. It
probably averaged not more
than $1.00 per acre, if that much
lu 1890 the capitalization of rail-
roads in Texas was as follows:
Bonds. ....................
_____......$233,000,000.00
Stocks.....................
______________$177,000,000.00
Other indebtedness__________
................$30,000,000.00
Making a total of about_______
..............$440,000,000.00
Just vvliat it cost to build
these 8,800 miles we had - in
1891 has never been determined,
and owing to the absence mid
destruction of records will
never be known with accuracy.
Since 1891 railway construction
The great problem in the
early days was to get the rail-
roads built. Now that we have
the railway net pretty well' de
veloped, the problem is how to
obtain the most efficient service
at the least possible cost.

The recent rains and snows have put a season in the
ground that old-timers claim was never better in Gaines
County. With this excellent season and the many new-
comers who are coming into our county to farm and make
their homes, we should all work together and co-operate
in making Gaines County the banner county of the South
