said. They hav e s meone to talk to
each day. combat isolation and
maintain physical and mental health
In some cases, an added benefit is
that volunteers might be the first
person on the scene in the case of an
emergency"
When one of the volunteer drivers
arrives between 11 am and 1 p m.
and cannot get someone to answer
the door, they call a relative,
Cardwell said 'The volunteer will
call 9-1-1 if necessary." she said.
Nelson recalled an incident sever-
al years ago when a client was found
in her bathroom, unable to get up.
after having fallen down over the
weekend.
“She was OK, but this was a situ-
ation that if we hadn't been around,
there's no telling how long she
might have been on the floor,”
Nelson said.
Volunteers also benefit from the
serv ice. Cardwell said. “It increases
awareness of the needs that exist in
the community among the elderly
and the hotnebound." she said.
Nelson agrees it’s not just about
delivering food.
“It s forming a bond between the
volunteers and the folks they deliver
to,” he said. “Unfortunately, a lot of
them don't have a family member
close by, or they have family mem-
bers, but they don't come to see
them like they should They 're very
happy to see the volunteers, they get
to know these people and w hat their
needs are. Sometimes you are the
only person they see all day”
Typically, senior citizens that
qualify for the program are age 60 or
older, mainly hotnebound. unable to
prepare their own meals and have no
caregiver who can prepare meals for
them
Recipients must live in Wylie or
the Wylie school district.
Wylies Meals on Wheels pro-
gram consists of two routes The
routes are currently covered but
back-up drivers are needed,
Cardwell said.
“It only takes about an hour to do
the delivering." she said "Several of
our volunteers do it on their lunch
hour"
Donations to the Wylie Meals on
Wheels program can be sent to
Meals on Wheels of Wylie. PO Box
368. Wylie. TX 75098.
Donations can also be made at
area businesses that have collection
receptacles on their counters
