In the past few days to the for-

have been brought about by an

Announcement was made this
week by County Judge Karl W.
Wilson that the Commissioners'
Court of Deaf Smith county have
purchased a right of way 80 feet
wide bordering West Lake. hIx
miles west of Hereford, and have
commenced construction of a new
road past the lake which will
eliminate tin* two mile detour now
necessary for those using the Har-
rison road west.
The grade through the lake has
•xwt the tax payers of Deaf Smith
county thousands of dollars to
maintain, declares Judge Wilson,
and it was found lm|>osslhle to re-
pair the grade or make it wide
enough to care for the traffic
without spending thousands of dol-
lars more, with the probability
that the road bed would never be
In a permanently solid condition.
Because of this condition of
(-ontinual expense to maintain the
road, states Judge Wilson, the Com-
missioners have purchased the right
of way and arc building a new
section <»f road around the lake
on higher ground where the foun-
dation will be solid and perman-
ent. The new road will be ojien
for traffic the latter part of this
week. A saving of two miles In
distance will be effected for those
using that route to or from Here-
ford when the new road Is com-
pleted.
