Starting a column has become
a lublt with the newsp.iis-rs of tin*
Panhandle, and Kernel Tack" Is
to blame lor It.
Ever since Gene Howe, editor of
tie Amarillo News Globe, who is
known to his readers us "Kernel
Ernsauius Tick," has secured such
tremendous publicity for Amarillo
through comment lu tils column
about people and events, the read-
ers of every newajstper In the Pan-
handle have demanded that the
editor of the paper In their com
munlty establish n similar column
and got tin* home town some pub-
licity
John McCarty, editor of the Dal
hurt Texas, admitted a couple of
weeks ago that tic wins feeling the
pressure of public opinion, urge of
his readers, that he cstablishe a col-
umn In the Texan. Wo despite his
dislike of the Idea (though every
reporter, even the cub Just start-
ing in, nurses an ambition some
day to write a regular column)
John started bis column but said
he couldn’t think of a title for II.
As I lie renders of The Brand In-
sist that their p.tpcr have all of
the futures that every other news-
paper In tho Panhandle-Plains can
boast of, unJ want Hereford to get
some of that publicity that other
communities seem to gather with
case, The Brand is herewith es
tuhllshlng a column which will lie
conducted by Its news editor, Wil-
liam E Moore.
Unlike Editor McCarty, how-
ever, there was no difficulty ex-
perieined in selecting a title for
the column, in fact, It was so
easy that It Is hard lu understand
why other columnists haven’t dis-
covered It first,
Being classed yet ns only a new-
comer with Ids reputation still to
make, the writer after o couple
of years In the Panhandle, mostly
around ('banning, Ihilhnrt and Ama-
rillo, realises that keeping this col-
umn Interesting to the readers of
The Hrund and getting the publi-
city for Hereford that they want,
is going to be some job.
However, The Brsnd has one
mission, one purpose, and that, la
to give 11s readers what they want,
and they say they had rather read
a column than an editorial.
No one ever reads the editorials
In u newspajs-r any more.
The people are not Interested In
what the editor thinks. They arp
doing their own thinking.
Which is why most newspapers
tislay have quit printing editorials
ami have started a column.
A column Is really the readers'
own editorial written by them-
selves. It expresses their opinion,
comment and criticism on every-
day happenings and tells about
their own experiences.
That Is why It Is Interesting.
It is human, as we are all tin
man wha ever our walk In life.
Our own experiences, our opin-
ion-, are always Interesting to us.
and sometimes to the other fel-
low.
We all have an opinion on most
any subject, whether anyone else
agrees with us or not. We may be
wrong, hut we think we are right.
That la why the editor of a
newspaper used to write all of the
editorials himself. He was always
right Ht least lu his own mind.
Today times hove changed and
the readers of a newspaper are
expressing their own opinion In
print through a newspaper column
and are fouling that other people
agree with those opinions or that
others have had experiences in
life similar to their own. By eom
paring notes, all may benefit or
he entertained.
This column Is established for
our readers and will be Just as
Interesting ah they make It.
Most writers of a newspaper col-
umn cull It their column. This
writer Isn't going to do that. He
Is going to "puss the buck'' to the
readers. It Is their coluiuu. And
It Is up to them to keep It Inter-
esting to themselves.
If you want to laugh, send In
Houiciliing that you'd laugh at If
you saw It In print. If you want
to cry, send lu -a sad story -about
the other fellow's hard luck. If
you want to tell Imw Hereford and
the rest of the world can he made
a heller place lo live In, send In
your plan. If you have lost your
dog or want to know Imw lo moIvc
any difficult or domestic problem,
some uffoctloo.il affair or how to
make money without work, ask
Bill. He prohuhly don't know hut
he has u flue staff of advisors, pro-
fessional and amateurs. Just ed
