evidently the companionship of his old
friend, Yellow Bear, known among the
pale faces as J. L. Elbert, Esq., the
pioneer real estate man, was grateful
to him, and they were well nigh in-
separable.
Quanah had many thrilling escapes
in the early days in the settlement of
this country, beginning with the bat-
tle a few miles south of here when No-
eona, his father, was killed by Gov.
Ross, and his mother, Cynthia Ann
Parker, captured. His numerous es-
capades on the plains would fill vol-
umes. still he never came nearer to
death's door than one night at the old
Pickwick hotel at Fort Worth in the
late eighties.
Quanah and another Indian chief
had gone to lied in the same room,
after carefully blowing out the gas.
The fumes during the night killed

ley with Canhe creek as its base liqp.
Sheltered by the steep mountains I
Quanah's fourteen room residence
commands a magnificent view over
several hundred acres of the richest
land imaginable. The creek bottom
is densely Wooded making it very easy
to pass the valley without noticing it.
The chief has always made it a point I
to be on a pleasant footing with his
white neighbors, but not long ago was
seriously discomfited by their action
in refusing, his little grandson ad-
mittance to the only public school inj
the neighborhood. Raising the race j
issue cut the old Comanche through
the soul and he has never been the I
Quanah's companion but the old chief j same to his heighbors since —Quanah
remained in the land of the living Tribune-Chief.
