THE HONOR GUARD--from the Navarro County Sheriff's Office posted the colors and
gave a 21 gun salute at the Memorial Day Program at the Navarro County War Memorial.
Umbrellas were the order of the day as there was a drizzle during the ceremony, but
many county residents ignored the weather to show respect for those who gave the
ultimate sacrifice. Navarro County Sheriff Les Cotten lead the crowd in the Pledge of
Allegiance and Stephen Smith sang the Star Spangled Banner. Guest speaker was Ross
Maxfield. Curtis Sparks sang God Bless America and Irene Davenport read the poem,
Heroes Unaware, taps was played by Les Grayson.
The Masonic Lodges of Navarro County program was moved to the Corsicana High
School because of the inclement weather. The Randy Blue Band entertained guests

Firestone tax
abatement approved FFA Rodeo bigger and better
By Neal Williams
Tribune Editor
Navarro County Commis-
sioners approved a tax
abatement plan for Firestone
Building Products Com-
pany.
The plan, already ap-
proved by the City of Cor-
sicana and Navarro College,
would cut the property tax
for Firestone by 50 percent
for ten years.
The Firestone plant will
be located on State Highway
31, just East of True Value
Hardware Distribution.
Corsicana was chosen as
the site for the plant because
it is located between the
largest market (Dallas area)
and the second largest mar-
ket (Houston area).
The plant is expected to
be in operation by the end
of the year and will employ
about 50 people.
In other business:
♦ Approved the minutes
of the May 12 meeting and
payment of the bills.
♦ Voted not to pay an in-
voice received from a prop-
erty appraiser, with Com-
missioners Kit Herrington
and Olin Nickleberry ab-
staining.
The county had investi-
gated the purchase of the old
Highway Department loca-
tion across Highway 31
from Wal Mart. The state
required the county to have
the property appraised and
pay $2,500 to the state to
cover the appraisal.
The appraiser hired by the
county apparently didn't fill
out the forms correctly and
missed several deadlines.
The state hired and paid an
appraiser. The appraiser
hired by the county, sent the
county a bill for $600.
Since the county had
given the state the money to
pay for the appraisal, com-
missioners felt this was a
matter between the appraiser
and the state.
Voted not to replace an
employee in Precinct 2 un-
til the new budget year starts
in October.

The annual Kerens FFA
Rodeo continues to grow in
both contestants and specta-
tors.
A new event added this
year, senior steer riding, for
girls age 15 or older proved
to be a big hit, especially for
the girls as none of them
stayed on the steer the re-
quired eight seconds.
There was over 180 en-
tries for the two nights.
