St John's Gospel
Meant to Prove
Divinity of Christ
T™ Gospel of St. John im-
^ presses us with its richness
and; greatness and also with its
limitations. It would be very
inadequate as an account of
Christ’s earthly life. Only pass-
ing mention is made of Nazareth
and there is nothing in it at all
about Bethlehem.
But John’s work Is also sig-
nificant for much that the other
evangelists left out. His work
came later than the others and
assumes these earlier records. It
was unnecessary for him to give
a detailed narrative. His pur-
pose was to discuss the eternal
nature and .the meaning of
Christ’s life.
So John begins with an argu-
ment or thesis where the others
had started with historical
events. If Jesus were the divine
Son of God, His earthly birth
was but an incident in the activ-
ity of an eternal being. He had
always existed and, as God
manifest in the flesh, it was also
through Him that the world was
made. »
Thus John says that Christ
was the eternal Word, which
was in the beginning. But the
Word became flesh, and Uv
dominant doctrine of the Gospel
of John is that of the Incarna-
tion of God in the earthly life o'
Jesus.
All that follows is in witness,
or testimbfly, to this fact.
whole Gospel is. a procession ot
events, incidents, teachings anu
personal witness, all testifying to
the glory of the Son of God.
Evidence of the authenticity of
the work is the Gospel itself.
Books like the Gospel of John are
not invented. They are the prod-
uct of the divinity to which they
bear witness.
