4 Well-Deserved Tribute
Plans lor the observance of CHI Progrea* Wwk — Oct
ober 14-20- including paying tribute to the oil industry# am-
bassadors of good will - the service itation operator*.
There are some 200,000 nervier station* in this country ,
of which the great majority are run by competitive small
businessmen They are the chief contact between the con-
atuners of oil and the oil industrf Thus, the ntatnm opera*
tor is a symbol of the industry he repmmnts, “Just as we
can drive into his station, say ‘Fill her up,' and be sure erf
prompt and efficient service, so can Unde Sam say to an oil
company T need a million gallons of jet plane fuel' or '•Ship
a hundred tanker loads of diesel <«! to our defense forces in
ghirope' — and be equally sure of prompt action " Anti the
day-in-and-dnv-out pressure of ct^mpetilkm which has
brought the service station to its high level erf development
j» equally as strong in the 42,000 larger bustnesses within
the industry
From the community standpoint, the service station#
mad the men who own ami work tn them are a tremendous
asset As one local chamber of commerce said, “We salute
(jw mm from whom visitors get their first impression* of our
town, the first local residents most visitors meet, and the
wily resnicnt many travelers talk to. They send a stream
of customers to our restaurants, stores, hotels and other
businesses . . “Oil Program Week m certainly a good turn
'tn give these men a hand.
