Fast Service Sure
On Soil Sampling
Sent in for Tests
College Station. < Spl,>—Th«
number of toil «uui»ple* being sent
Ipl ■
~.,tr to the Soil Testing laboratory at
Sf*Ei College Station have dropped to a
■■ new low for this season., report#
M K Thornton, rxl.-u.k.u agrt-
cnltursl ckenutt who ' has charge
of the lab.
-* The chemist say* tfri- Mg i ••<*»»«
for the slow down is the cvnlinu*
lug drouth ami the umertaintty
that rain will come In time to per-
mit the seeding of fall and winter
pa.t(t.ur« M or winter Itiguniw crop#.
But Thornton is sure I hat Texas
farmers and ranchmen who go
ahead with their planning will be
far ahead when rain* do come
General rains could . nus<- a Iasi
minute rush of soil samples to the
tab which would overtax the fac-
lUtles and delay analysts reports
to producers for many days, thus
aiowlng the Jnh of seeding If the
lab report ts to be <>f value
Thornton believe# that farmer*
should be prepared to tahe ad-
vantage of any attention which
give* them enough moisture to in-
sure a stand of fall seeded crop*.
By subibttung soil i sample* now
while the lab 1* not too busy, pro-
ducers can be assured of getting
fast returns. Too. they will be in
a position to go ahead with the
planning tor tall and winter crops.
The dollar spent for a soil ana-
lysis is eftan described as the best
dollar which cap be spent for
fertiliser. The soil analysis could
mean the difference between an
average or below fall and winter
cropping season or a highly suc -
cessful one. Top yields or high
quality forage are -needed now la
every section of Texas and the use
of fertilisers will play a big part |
tn making these objective* pos-
sible, says Thornton
