JOHN UNDERWOOD TALKS
And Tells Why the Price Has
Not Increased Tex Com-
pany Securing Reserve.
"Had It not bees for the ftrewhh-h de-
stroyed two and a half mill long of U.rrtln
Is the Humble field." stated aas of lite
producers In the field to a !DBt repre-
sentative yesterday "the pries would now
be St cents per barrel lnatesd 16 ct-nta.
This may sound queer sad It la qua-er.
but nevertheless It Is an exact summing
up of the present altusttua. Tss prt- of
oil la not going to be Increased until the
Texss cutnpany gets all the reserve n -tied
rtt th prfnt time there hi no com-
petition In the field. The Ouffey oompany
and the Hun company each has atui .hi
the resMTvi- they need. Before Ittn fire
the Texas company was well fixed The
production waa on the decresae day by
day. and these big concerns standing
back with sll the reserve they .ided.
were ready for the price of oil to advance-
An advance would have ben to
their Intereata. H would have admit ted
of their getting from the consumers good
prices for the oil they had secured at low
prtcea frcm the producers.
"But the fire depleted the reserve of the
Texas company and this company wn
not redy for the price to advance after
that until that reserve could be st'cured
or lug to secure two and a half million-
of barrels of oil from a field wht ti la
falling in production every day. Is It not
atrasge that this company haa vortually
no competition? It stands to reason and
every fair minded man must admit that
such a demand on a failing field would
boom the price of oil If there wa not
aome agency at work. The agency is un-
doubtedly In the nature of a secret understanding-
between the big compan-ee It
la essy enough for a man to say theae
things. He may know that he Is correct
because of his experience hi watching how
such things are done but getting on the
stand and making oath that each t the
rase Is an entirely differest preposition
LACK OF PROOF.
"There Is some talk of bringing these
conditions to the notice of the attorney
general. Suppose be should Interest him-
self In the matter and suppose he should
be Informed of these conditions the first
question he would ask is. Caa you prove
these things?"
"It has been charged time and again
that the Standard OU company control-
tlae situation In Texas as It does In all
oil producing Htates. and It has been just
sj often denied by those interested in in different
big companies which do control
the situation. There Is hardly any doubt
In my mind that the heads of the big
companies operating in Texas can go on
the witness stand and with perfect hon-
esty testify that to the best or indr
knowledge and belief the Standard noes
sot own a cent's worth of stock in the
companies they represent. At the name
time there Is not the least doubt In my
ml nd but t ha t the Standard asm pa n y
does control sll the big companies In
Texas.
"John W Gates It is well known con-
trols the Texss company. The Mellims
control the Ouffey company. Yet fc-lthfr
tiates nor the Hello na may own a dollar's
worth of stock In reality of either .m-
psny f am firmly of the onln.wt thai
is tea represents the Standard and that
the stock held In hi name In the Texss
company Is Rockefeller money I im
convinced that the same is true with
reference to the Ouffey company
The policies of these different sets of
people are undoubtedly controlled by the
wishes of Henry Rodgvrs. who. hi turn
ta eoatrolled by the wishes of Rocke-
feller and what coold be more simple
than for the headHsrters of the Texas
company to recel ve ordr ra to pu rsue a
certain policy and for the rw.iMoua iters
of the Ouffey company to simultaneous-
ly receive Instructions to puri: a like
illcy. This could le done without the
sds of the different -muanl- In Tevas
ever having a conference or wtihout them
knowing what kind of a policy the oppo-
site company Intended to pursue.
HOW IT WORKS
For Instance when the ftre '-nnsumed
the Texas company's oil In Humble the
Guffey company officials In this Stats
could have received Instructions from
headquarters that they had a Kufftclent
amount of oil In reserve Th Tr-xaa com-
rty could have rcc Ived Instructions
rn headquarters to replenish at 15
cents per barrel. Of course I he heads
of the Texas company In this Htjat would
nave no idea of the policy whl h t Ire Ouf-
fey Intended to pursue Put. t.n k of It
sH. the interests In the East whl' h con-
trol both companies would know to s dot
Just what tlie policy of each company
would le."
The above statement was made bv Mr.
John t'nderwood. who Is on the Humble
field every day and In clos touch with
all the small Independent prodti'-ers. Mr.
l'nderwood stales that all of the Inde
pendent producers hare expressed them-
selves to him along the above line. Many
of them he states because of the fact
that they are tied down in "uch a man
ner that they do not feel like ll would do
them any good to talk. sll-;ill submlt-
ract. states Mr. I nderwood. i he ma-
Srity of the small producers In the Hum-
e field are In such a predicament that
they must silently so ben It and take the
prices offered for their oil. They have
no way of storing and they must sell
to the only concern offering to buy the
Texas company.
