The other addresses delivered were also
exceptionally interesting and entertaining.
Worthy of apeclal note and comment Is
the exMblt of Texas tobacco made by 'L. H.

demonstration farm. The exhibit consists
of 1M tobacco fillers and MOT cigar wrapper
ard cigars made from the tobacco and tite

Mr. Shelter stated that thla wrapper to-
bacco was grown from Havana seed under
a lattice shade and yielded from goo to 120
pounda per acre which waa worth on the
open market from Q.M to 11.50 per pound.
Ths Miles tobacco la also from Havana stock
and yields from WO to 1000 pounds per acre
worth from 40 cents to H 2I per pound.

Carpenter Is hers to say to the people of
Beaumont and Jefferson county that hfl la
willing to put up s plant here if they will
obligate to plant as much as fifty or a hun-

that this waa not an average year for figs
but that even this season the sverage yield

Mr. Qeorge Bruce of Houston president of

L. H. nhalfer of Orange alao delivered aa
Interesting address and said. In part:
"1 was sent Into this sXata la 1M by ths
government aa a tobacco export to Inventl-
gals conditions and ascertain whathsr or not
tobacco could be grown her that would take
the plat of th Cuban tobacco In thla coun-
try. This waa not because the United Btatea
government wanted to keep Out Cuban to-
bacco but because Cuba was unable to sup-
ply tbs demand of ths American people for
Cuban cigars. My experiments convinced
me that aome of the soil of Southeast Texas
would grow a tobacco that would take the
lass of ths Cuba predwex.
"I resumed my posltloa with th govern-
ment to establish a demonstration farm la
Orange county. I demonstrated that Texaa
would produce tobacco of such quality both
filler and wrapper aa to make a 0-cent
cigar complete. 1 am sure that there are
parts of Jefferson county that will raise to-
bacco ths ssnie as we do In Orange county.
Ths government ha done Its part In demon-
strating what could be done and It Is now
up to ths enterprising people to do the rest.
"If any Jefferson rounty farmsr wishes to
raise tobacco I will agree to take th product
off hi hand at top market price and to
start a cigar factory of my own." -
