BT RANK H. SWEET.
(Copyright. 104. by Frank H. Sweet)
Caryton bad retired lata th night be-
fore for he had son to.. town on an even-
ing train attar a lot of things for th boys
things that wer mostly covered with
red papers and decorated with Chines
designs la gilt and that bad fuses at-
tached. It was odd hut b had not onoa
thought of tha Fourth being ao nesr until
Newborn th third nephew had 4clarel
his Intention of remaining out all night
to "waits up thinga."
He had auaMenly realised that bis
brother with whom b was spending a
few weeks was only a teller In a country
bank. Six nephews with perhaps a few
nickels each to upend for th explosives
necessary to accomplish th waking up!
When he raturnau two men were re-
quired to help him In bringing th pack-
axes from th train. Th ut nepna
were In th back yard then at work upon
a diabolical horn which was to blow
wakefulness over th entire neighborhood:.
Caryton hurried th explosives through
the front hall and hid town behind ta
library window draperies. It was then 11
o'clock and h tiptoed up to his room
for such sleep aa he could get before
the early mora lug aolsea ahould com-
mene. Ten minute later h wat dosing oft
when tha first experimental blasting
of th horn commenced. By th time
he had found a way to pack th bed-
clothe about his car there are) various
accompanying and dutquiennti hlssea
snapping and roars. Than directly un-
der hi window came an explosion that
shook tha houa and brought him to a
slltlna; posture. They had found hla eon-
trlbuuon! And It was only midnight! :-
Caryton aank back and listened with
varying emotion a regret at his generos-
ity submission to a just retribution and
finally a pleasurable sensation of retro-
grading to hla own boyhood. By 1 o'clock
ha was th ringleader ot all their more
during demonstration. '
But when he went In Ions after day-
light blackened and burned and bruised'
and tried to make himself presentable (or
breakfast ha felt that ha had had enough
of the Fourth.
After breakfast Caryton made a dl-

with apparently no oblect or destination
save ito ctothe Its bank with moae. He
would follow Its eccentric winding until
perhaps ha could get cool enough to In-
duce earn ot the moas to grow upon him.
But as he passed the last houa In th
village and noted a figure In light dress
upon th phut half hidden by a climb-

beyond th songs of robins and oriole
and ar-arrowa. and only heard th oc
caalonal voice of hermit thrush and
tsnager and woodpecker.
Presently he put bl rod together and
cast a fly Into th atream. After a halt
hour of desultory fishing he found an
enticing rock and seated hlmaelt upon It

entsngie It h was bringing th hornet
toward him In an angry cloud.
Evn ir he looked one dropped unoa
hi ear- and another upon hla forehead
and a third upon the back of hla neck. .
Tha unexpected pain brought him to hi
feet with a yell. In the presence of others
th cry would have bean suppressed; but
back here In tha woods with no one In
hearing. It waa simply a straight yell of
surprised exasperation nd pain. iA mo-
ment later he was tearing through th
wood with th speed of his college ren-
ins; days and with what ha believed to be
10.000 hornet singing a death song about
hi head. :
He .had not gon more than a doten
yard when h broke Into an open glade
and almost Into Miss Leslie's arms. The
sight of her brought him to himself and
h whirled swiftly with the Intention of
dashing in another direction for he real-
ised th consequence to th girl. But her
quiet authoritative voice atayed him.
'-Throw yourself down upon your face
air. Caryton" ah admonished. "Quick!
It's'th only way. Don't mind me. I am
her often and know how to avoid th '
hornets."
H hesitated but an Instant then
obeyed burying his face deep In th
moae. A little while. nd the vicious hum-
ming leaaaned and soon died away alto
Kther When he rose cautiously and
ked around. Mia lenlla waa standing
among. tha foliage twenty yards away
where the had retreated so lowly a not
to attract the hornets' attention fine
now cam forward.
"I hop you're not badly hurt Mr.
Cnrytou."
He looked at her ruefully remembering
tn yell.
"N no I think not" he answered;
"only la spirit. Tou heard my battle
rryr'
There wss lurking mischief tn her eyes
but br vote wss calm.
"Why. yes; I heard It of course" th
said demurely. "But yu were perfectly
excueabt. Hornet are awful creatures '
"H'm! Tss I ruppoae ao" doubtfully.
Then he caught eight of a lunch basket
and ot a pile of familiar objects beside it
thing eovered with red paper and decor-
ated with Chinese design In gilt and
that had fuse attached. HI eyes sought
hers Inquiringly.
"I beg your pardon Miss Leslie." he
aid "but. how a it your happen to be
here and with fireworks?"
lt waa her turn to look embarrassed.
"Why I I am trying to accustom as.
elf to them." ah explained. "We al-
ways have a lot at home and the boys
laugh at m for screaming whenever on
goes off near . me.' They arc going to
rave a big time tonight and I I brought
the off here to to practice with them
so I needn't scream. Th boy will aw
surprised.''
"I see. And hav you fired off tnv ytT"
"N no" b confessed frankly "I

"Writ.". boWJy "why can't I stay with -

It wa a Ion. red-ltter day a glorious

of tha hornets: and when In the lata aft
