NEW STATION AT SOUTH END

' Xaitead of Engines.
For aero month the mayor and olty
mlesloaers hara tan considering the matter
of increasing the city's Ore righting facilities
and Ftro Commlasloner Appleby has about
completed hla figures aa to th approximate
coat of the proposed increase. H will oa
Monday ask that the mayor and council au-
to jrtxe the lncnre.ee which will coat approxi-
mately eiM according to tha" figure of
Mr. Appleby.
It la propoaed to Install a new engine bouae
In the rtfth ward In lieu of No. I elation
on McKee afreet and a new station In the
South End section of the city. Each station
111 be equipped with steamers and other
fire ftf httnc apparatua und the fire lighting
force will he Increased about a dosen men.
At the present time there la no steamer at
No S station The building la an old one
and can not be used much longer. It la the
purpose to move thla atatton to another local-
Itv and build the proper character of build-
ing In the matter of the nation for the 8outli
Knd it will be placed on the aame lot where
the eemer lift atatton will be located The
city authorltlea have not definitely decided
upon the location for this station aa yet.
though It was originally planned to be placed
on lisulslana. at the Intersection of llolman
street by Alexander Potter when he In-
stalled the present sewer system Thl was
before the days of Westmoreland which has
tieconie one of the prettiest residential dis-
trict. In the city.
When the city officlala began coneidering
the proposition to Install toe eubpumplng
plant according to Potter'e epeclflcatlone at
thla aite some of the people of Westmoreland
took the matter up and asked that the sta-
tion not be placed right In front of the
Westmoreland gate. The city officials act-
ing upon this request have been looking for
a new location In that vicinity and are now
considering two or three sitae.
When a site la selected the stihpumptng
station will be Installed on one corner of ths
lot and a Mrs station on ths other.
VI LI. I BE AIR FROM WATER PL-ANT.
Recently Commissioner Thompson water
and sewer commissioner has been securing
I figures relative to using air from the com
pressors at the water plant to lirt the sewage
at the substation The original plan waa to
Install a bollerhouss to be equipped with an
electric aa well as a gasoline engine the lat-
ter to be used should the e.sctrlc power fall
down. Mr Thompson after looking Into the
matter of using air through a two-Inch pipe
from the water plant lias concluded that
this is the beat proposition
The use of air will do away with the n-
Klne house In fact there will be nothing
nbove ground and the resident adjacent
will have nothing to complain of.
Wll.l SAVE NEAT SI M.
The difference In the coat of installing
I In engine and engine house over the run-
ning of the two-Inch pipe to convey the air
will be about tamo. The cost of labor and
fuel for running the engines would be about
in per day for every day In the jear or an
annual cost of fSJfu
Rv using air from the water plant to lift
the sewage the coat for lubor and fuel will
lie done away with aa the air will coma
from th compreaeer at ths water plant
which. Is always In motion pumping the
water from the walls
It is likely that the city will within the
next week or so. close :i dsal for a site near
estmoreland. and when thta la dono active
work luward th construction of ihe two-
Ituh all line to the point will be begun the
contract for extnudlng the aewers and lat-
erals to the point already having been let.
In the matter of purchasing increaaed fire
fighting apparatua. It Is very probable that
the matter will be taken up at an early date.
Mr Applebv slates that himself and the
chief of the fire department. Mr. O Leary.
have been over looking at altea In the Ktfth
ward for a fire station.
11ARRIPRVRG ROAD NOT IN CONTRACT.
During the rest couple of weeks the people
down along Hurrteburg road from the Pres-
ton avenue tunnel to Ml'.by street have been
discussing the matter of the paving of that
street with vitrified brick and the Impres-
sion has gone out that thla atretch of streft
was Included In the contract awarded to A
T Lucaa some time ag" This Is not a fait.
Before the rortract was let the matter of
paving that portion of Harrlsburg road waa
discussed but It waa decided that the city
vas not In a position to do this work at
present. It appears to be the Jetermlnatlon
of ths mayor and city officials however to

MAT HAVB TO KT .p MILLS.
Be far the mil It with headquarter In
Houston have beea running to their capac-
ity but with the present weakness of the
market and th absence f a demand
worthy of oonal deratio n . the time la near at
hand wbea they will have to shut dowa or
run on shorter time.
Another feature of the situation which
lumbermen view with apprehension Is the
almott certain Inability of the railroads to
provide car to move the product when the
demand shall have become atronger. At thla
moment the car ahortage Is a handicap to
th Industry and thla while there la no par-
ticular demand on rolling ato k to mart
farm products Ths ootlon crop being Iste
there will be lea am for the roads to
move It when It does come on and some
atrenuoas situations era then likely to de
velop. If It Is so hard for the mills to get
oar to move their light business now. when
there Is no heavy crop movement on. what
win their sosrtloa be when the full move
ment of the cottoa crop begins and the lum
ber buauesa picks up as In all probability
It will?
RAILROADS OCT OF MARKET.
As proving their oontentlon that the cur-
tailment In the demand Is due to agitation
against oorperationa mill men with that be
lief point to the faet that ths railroads are
practically out of the market for lumber
and timber now whereas they were former
ly among th beat uatomers of the mills.
Soma large orders hav been cancelled by
th railroads slnoe the rate reduction move-
ment by legislation has been on and It
seems to be the policy of the roads to go
alow with their expenditures for Improve-
ments until they find Just where they Hand
with the people.
Another big customer haa juat been driven
from th Stat usder the operation of the
anti-trust law In the International Harvest-
er ooneera.
There are mill men here who do not be-
lieve la trusts and who declare that It la
their wish to tee all the Illegal combinations
burstsd op but at the tame time they real-
ise that la some Instances the concerns re-
garded by the public aa trusts and which
possibly are trusts art among ths largest
buyers of lumber. Men making such state-
ments are members of the lumber associa
tions and art subscriber to the St. Louis
piicellst. too against which such a hue and
cry waa raised In this State recently aa
snowing tne existence or a lumber trust.
TRUST TALK DUE TO IONORANCB.
Mill men think the talk of a lumber trust
waa the result of Ignorance of conditions In
the lumber trade rather than to knowledge
ot them for they declare that anyone who
will take the trouble to Investigate will find
not only that there It no lumber trust
among the manufacturers but that they act
with the fullest Independence in running
tbetr mills and In making their prices.
The BL Louis list Is made from the aver-
age of quotations furnished by various mills
and Is sold to those who wish to buy it mere-
ly for the Information It contains. Anyone
who may order the prlceJlst will receive It.
and no mill man la under any obligation
whatever to follow th price given therein.
As evidence of the truth of this manufac-
turers aay that they can show sales made
both above and below the list and point out
that when they ask a number of mills for
quotations oa any larg erder they may
procure and wteh to flit eaan. ...
