to the V1.657.3S0 letter originating In the
flve-eitlee. In all Texna the Southweat-
ern company handled 437.134.164 local and
long distance calls. While actual postal
figures f'jr- tha State are not available.
It la estimated that the number of ptecea
of flrt-clss mail matter outgoing
counting mall one way aa telephone calls
are totalled waa about 06.i0fr. For
the whole United State during 111 the
aggregate of telephone call waa 14.400.-
4O0.0C0. in comparison to t.704.000000 let-
ters. At the same time It has been ascer-
tained thut the people of Texas are pay-
ing no more for their telephone service
than for their postal service. In spite of
the fact that twite aa many communloa-
tlona are y " wire. The telephone com-
pany ta paling taxes advertising in prac-
tically vey newanaper. haa fn Invest-
ment o-er and over again that of the
poetofflce upon which to pay Interest
and yet offers Us palpable advantage In-
time of transmission and in the fact that
the eost of the answer is generally In-
cluded with the originating call.
The United Statee Government does nor
pay taxes. Instead of yielding direct in-
terest to all the people who represent Its
stockholders. It has always until quite
recently showed an annual deficit.
Extending Telephone .8yetem.
"We look forward tort the time" says
Vice President J. E. Famsworth of the
Southwestern Telegraph and Telephone
Company "when the service of the tele
phone wlU xbe as general for the entire-
country as is that or the postoriice.- We
anticipate a condition when State serv-
ice by wire will be aa expeditious and as
common as local telephone service Is
today.
"The fact atands that already we reach
more points directly with our lines in
Texas than doea the United States mall
ana in otner parts or the country llne-
4 men and engineers are now at work
Bringing the Atlantic and the Pacific
coasts within the radiua of telephone
conversation.
"We anticipate the time when postal
sen-Ice will be practically restricted to
the dell vet y of packages ordered by wire
and the transmission of thorn communl-
catlons which require an original written
record or are ao unimportant as to leave
time in transmission out of consideration.
Texas Leads France In Phones.
"Today in Texas alone with its 4000-
000 people there are more telephones than
there are In French with 40000000 peo-
ple. There the Government owna the
system and does not seek business by ad-
vertising. Here we go after new sub-
scribers and every additional name added
to our lists Increase the actual value of
service to every other subscriber.
"In Houston alone there are more tele-
phones than In the Balkan States with
Portugal thrown In. Dallas haa more
telephones In its local system than there
are In the whole kingdom of Spain."
