OUR PRESENT HOME
A Six-8tory building 90x1 15 and u trirtre-tory building 50x75 ft. We are ol occupants of
these two building and use more floor npace than any other retail dry (foods store in Texas
REAT oaks from little acorns grow because the little acorns contain vital-
ity and large possibilities of development. Success is never an accident
and nowhere is this truer than in success achieved from small beginnings.
Seventeen years' ago a tiny shop so small that it could hardly be termed a
store was opened at the corner of Travis street and Congress avenue. The name
Alkemeyer was painted above the door and from the first day the little business
thrived. There was not a great assortment of goods but quality was there and
prices were reasonable and attentive and capable store service was maintained.
The store made a hit. It was crowded with customers and those who bought
once came back for that is the onfy way to build up a trade. The customer
must like what he got better than the money he paid for it and so wants to go
again. He calls it getting values.
Inside of two years the business had to move into more commodious quar-
ters at 505 and 507 Travis street. Here inside of five years the business was
doubled and redoubled and again outgrew its location. When the five-year lease
had expired it was imperative to move into the newly prepared three-story
building on Prairie avenue at the present location of the business.
Soon however the discovery was made that the three-story building could
not hold the quantities of goods demanded and the volume of trade any more
than the tiny shop had been able to do in its day and because business came
in a tidal wave and because every chance purchaser became a steady customer
the firm had to take the first floor of an adjoining building as an annex.
But even with that increase two years ago the firm found that it must not
only increase but double its store room to accommodate its trade.
Architects were consulted and three additional storieB were added to the
main building making the structure the greatest retail business house in the city.
Not only that but all of the adjoining building was secured and utilized.
This gave Alkemeyer's nine big floors and made it decidedly the largest
retail store in all Texas.
Even this massive establishment and its mammoth departments bid fair to
be outgrown.
The Alkemeyer management thinks the secret of success is simple. It is not
luck or chance or a hit or miss policy. Other "tores occupied what might
have seemed a more advantageous location. Bigger rivals competed against
the small beginnings but were distanced and outclassed.
Giving the people good dependable merchandise cheaper than they can get
it elsewhere is what the Alkemeyer management has safely counted on to bring
results.
Good service and good values must be given to every customer. The good
will of the buyers is the future capital of the enterprise. Thin has been im-
pressed upon every employe from office boy up.
Alkemeyer's has increased and prospered and grown in favor with both
women and men. It has a long list of regular customers a clientele that em-
braces the discriminating buyers of the entire city and country.
To let these customers share in the good fortune and to build anew the foun-
dations of success Alkemeyer's has decided to give an Anniversary Sale. Other
stores give fire sales and bankrupt tales and loss sales and sales to mark their
going out of business. Alkemeyer will give one to show that it is in business
and in business to stay.
It will demonstrate that the successful merchant can give better values
than the confessedly unsuccessful ones. It will give bargains to people with
whom it expects to continue to do business.
The Seventeenth Anniversary Sale will be on a tremendous scale and will
eclipse all other great sales the store has ever held. "It will not cash in the good
will of its customers but will buy that good will in greater quantities by the only
method it can be bought namely value giving.
This sale will create a new and higher standard of supreme value giving
and show again that Alkemeyer's is the best by test.
