WANT NO ANSWER
QUESTIONS TO BAILEY DRAWN
IN INSULTING LANGUAGE.
J. "W. Madden of Crockett Make a
Statement Concerning an Inci-
dent Which Occurred There.
To the Editor :
In regard to the ao-caMod "Cj'iestlnns
for J. XV. BhIIpv" which werp pr- iiioil
to htm when he upokc hpre laht Thurs-
day and which have been published In th
Chronicle. I feol that It la only JukUcp to
Senator Bailey that I make the follow-
ing statement: It was I who introduced
the representative nf the artl-Bailpy peo-
ple here to Senator Htilley on the platform
from which lie spoke at the time thy
"questions" were pusented to him. After
1 introduced the rppresmitut lve he ex-
plained to Senator Bailey his tnlsHion
Which was to the effect that lie. an such
representative desired to preat-nt to Sen-
ator Bailey those "quest. una" with the
requeit that he answer them.
At the time of the Introduction I told
Senator Bailey that the representative
was u good man and a good democrat un 1
U was just in tills way that the questions
were tendered to him. Senator Bailey
hud previously been shown a copy of Uih
questions and fullj understood their con-
tent hefore lu went to the grounds to
speak. He very courteously told the rep-
resentative that he had already read them
and thai he could not either receive them
or anbAtr them for the reason that eacn
and eery one "f them reflected upon hi
Integrity and 1.1 veracity and that no
wuuid not discus his Integrity with any
man.
With this remark from Senator Bailey
tTTe reprenentai lve withdrew from tit
platform with the statement that that
was all ho wanted to know and then Sen-
ator Bailey assured him that In declin-
ing to receive t he questions? he w Is lied
him to utiderstand that he meant no dU-
courie.yy to him. Everything that w.is
done and said between them was In the
best of humor and at the very opening
of his speech Senator Bailey referred to
the incident In the folio whir langim
whlcn was taken down by ruy stenog-
rapher in shorthand as the words fell
rrom his lips : 'Kellow cit ixens ; Thin

When lie offered to present it I declined

attempted to impeach my Integrity and

drawn was dismurteous and offensive
ar.d I pointed out to them its offensive
features and fwn of them agreed that I
was right about It. but. in some wav and
for some reason this question was not
among those that were presented to Mon-
itor Bailey. Just why k was omitted
I do not know and I run only form a

Aheii and what was done afterward In
tns light of these things. I urn left in
UDposo that this question was omitted
because It was decided j h it If It wan
changed and prrseiiled in a courteous and
Inoffensive way. he would answer it
and this Is exactly what. I think thev
did not want done. In other words mv
opinion Is that all they wanted to do ww
to get Senator Bailey on record -is r-
fusing to receive and answer the ques-
tions and they thought that the best wav
to do this was to put them in such form
as he could not afford out of ji M-nse of
self-respect to have anything to do with
them. I say this becaus- 1 had pre-
viously put tlu-ni on notion that th ouen-
tlons would not be answered unless they

when they came In the opposite form. I
thoujfht I could see at once the real
purpose which lurked b.i..i u.m pre-
sentation of these questions to Senator
Bailey. I arn morally sure th.it Senator
Bailey would gladly answer any legiti-
mate and inoffensive question but when
he declines to answer questions such as
these he only commends himself to all
right-thinkinf and honest men
Hut. referring again to the Trinity
river proposition. Senator Bailey did dis-
cuss it. and his statement thercn cer-
tiiii.ly ought to be satisfactory to af con-
cerned and especially to the pe"ple of
t is seitl-m of-the State. The substance
of what he said as 1 now recill it wss
that he had no objection to making the
Trinity rn . r navigable. If It w as feasible
to do mi. but he thought tiiat in making
appropriations by congress for that pur-
pose Die money so apnroprlated should
be used for tho benefit of all sections
that were to be affected by the naviga-
tion of the Trinity snd that he did not
think that anv particular localitv should
le spe lallv favortd In making these ap-
propriations. In other words his Idea
s.etrns to be that the money appropriated
for this purpose should be so used as to
do justice to all soot Ions Interested In
this pr'Jei. and based his posit ion upon
the o.q democratic doctrine of " the great-
est cc.d in the greatest number." 1 can
hardly see how any good democrat run
Jird fault with this doctrine.
And rct.-rrlug again to the sn.ealld

began by reviewing his life showing the
power exerted by Joe Bailey as a young:
man fr a stable government In Missis-
sippi and of his beginning in Texas by
earning the confident e of the people
of his dlstrut.
He attacked the statement of Cono
Johnson that no reputabie democrat in
Texas undertook to detend yr excuse
Senator Hailey s t unducl at Austin and
cited the Instance of Judge Hare In say-
ing after uu ovation in Gainesville that
"tlie people made no mistake in retiring
me and electing Joe Hailej "
"When 1 think or the opposition by

at the time following the Spanlh-Auicrl-i
un war and .said I hat he was on of
the few statesmen whose vision wan not
impaired by t ho stress of the time and
w hu was able to steer clear of mon-
arch la 1 imperialism.
He ridiculed the repeated charges that
lialley had failed to pay the loans re
ce:vel from Tierce and said Hailey had

ganization of the Waters i'leree oil.

that of the public citizen acting openly
In full view of law. Hailey s opposi-
tion to the McFall resolution he said
was based on a veiled Insult It conveyed
against him and the rank unconstitution-
ality of the measure.
The speaker scored Johnson Cyclone
JOaviK ( raw ford Kthrldge and others aa
examples of Hailey opposition. It ihe
depth of Infamy he said to malutabk
that "the borrower lu free America la
the political slave (if the lender."
He commended the sj-ond Judgment of
the people of this district in sending to
the legislature J. H. Bowman who
"didn't have to go away to try a law suit
when the legislature was electing a sen-
ator" and who he said had more friends
throughout the Panhajridle than any other
man In the district and had had those
for years.
Senator Odell closed with the confi-
dent prediction of success on May 2. His
speech was freely applauded throughout.

The Man
from Rome
This is the title of a con-
tinued story by Marie Van
Vorst starting in this week's
issue of The Saturday
Evening Post.
An American rich beyond
the dreams of avarice ; a young
on with pockets bursting
with spending money a
daughter spoiled and beautiful;
also the man from
Rome. These persons
act a powerful story tragic in
E laces which will be illustrated
y A. B. Wenzcll and Vernon
Howe Bailey.
The title suggests a hinted
international marriage but
not this one.
Better begin to read this
tory now. It is hard to get
back numbers of THE SATUR-
DAY Evening Post. This
week's issue is now on sale.
