Monday wss toother food day for the cotton
tcarket at least for thote who desire to ea the
wtarket adrance. Strength in shown threugb-

'doting contidertbry higher than the opening.
"There wa a holiday in New Orleans Tackso
day having been observed in thit city and
New York and Liverpool were the center bf
the future business! The Liverpool eablea were
teady and higher regitterlng' a gain at the
cioae of 7 to 10 point. Thia ttimiiUud
the market on thit aide. Report eon tinned to
ecme to local cotton men that the market wa
feign enough and advited telling. The fact that
dry good houae have been tending out no-
tices the past day or two that price on finished
cotton good are firmer and that an. advance
any be expected I encouraging to the bnlls
in that I it tn opinion on the part of trade in-
terna that prices have hit the bottom and will
climb in the future. The trike in Kngland
I believed to bt -on the verge of settlement
and thi is a mll market factor now. With
-il things considered the market ws consid-
ered bullish vesterday. and last price in New
York were the highest of the day.
Januarv opened in New York at 8.80 an a-
Oatic of 4 points over the doting quotation of
Saturday night and closed at 8-37 and firm at
that. Thit wt t net advance of 1 1 pohrta.
Southern spot markets were all higher from
118 to He. New York advanced 1 point
following a 15-point rise Saturday and New
Orleans tdded I II to it guntaiions. Houston
and Galveston were each c up. In Liverpool
the snot business wtt good tale amounting to
10.000 bales and prices were firm and
points up.
Receipts at Houston yesterday were 35478
bales compared with ll.tHI bales the day be-
fore and 13.H83 bales Monday a year ago.
Shipments were 33333 bale.
The ginning report showing the amount ol
cotton ginned to Januerv 1 ls)13. will be pub-
lished this morning at 8 o'clock Houston
time. It is estimated that the figures will be
considerably over 14008000 bales.

NEW YORK. )annarT . The cotton mar-
ket was more active and showed increasing
firmness today with the close firm at a net ad-
vance of 11 to IS points on covering of shorts
support (ram trade sources tnd the mora opt Ira
istic view of the trad situation arising partly
from the belief that Lancashire labor troubles
.have been practically settled. The market
rpened steady at an advance of 4 to T points
which carried all the active month into new
'high ground for the movement.
There its heavy telling at the start in the
y of realising by recent buyer. Southern
-offerings and local bear pressure but Liverpool
continued very firm; then wat talk of smaller
ginning figures tomorrow than previously ex-
pected gnd after a setback of or 4 point
the market soon finned up again. Some of the
i largest recent buyers appeared to be .taking
twotits on the advance tnd. after showing a net
gain' af 8 to-13 points the market again re-
acted 8 or 4 points from the best but the big
reports ttlk of t decreasing movement and
Mcady yearly reports from Southern spot mar-
kets caused renewed firmness and the high
feint of the day wa reached in the late trad-
ing when active months told 1818 point net
higher or about 87 to 08poinl above the low
record of last month. The close wa. onlv
point or two off from the bett under realising.
Toothing definite was. learned regarding the ac-
tual result of today's meeting in Lancashire
but it sremer the general impression that the
iiroppsed basis of tettlement ts outlined Ithi last
Friday would anon result in reopening the En-
glish mills.
KxporU for the day were over 114.444 bales
and so far for the season are now nearly a
million bale in excels of the corresponding pe-
riod last vear. Southern spot markets were
generally steady with price a shade higher in
some instances and the late advance reflected
covering by some of the early sellers.

Stocks Were Depressed for a Tina
bat Finally Knled Steady and .
s Less Aetire.
tAutimttd fVa Krtwrt.)
NEW YORK January 1. A bear raid af
rather' small proportions with Union Pacific as
the especial object of attack depressed stocks
for a time after trading began today. Transec-
tion! were on a fairly large scale and Union
Pacific waa forced down nearly 3 point. Read-
ing Lehigh Valley U. S. Steel and a number
of other stocks lost a point or more. After an
hour of activity and faUng price the market
became steady ami trading diminished. During
the remainder of th day tne tone was stronger.
Prices hardened slowly tad hs tome cases the
recovery Teac bed a point. The dragging move
mcnt and lack of apeculat.v interest learned
to make more remote the prospects of an activ
specu.ativc market. The street now i oxteri-
encinz t mild reaction from the recent outburat
of optimism. Expectations of a decided change
for th better toon were based oa mdkatious
of improvement in both condition. While it it
agreed there hat brew gain of thit mature it
is not sufficiently pronounced to satisfy the
more optimistic forecasts
Predictions of improvements in business were
based largely upon the increase in orders for
iron tnd itwel but the opinions ' re how being
expressed that th voiume of orders this month
wnl not expand aa greatly as wss looked for in
December. A d-sspsotntiag feature is th ap-
parent inclination of the railrooda to reduce ar
ho d back orders for rail snd other materials.
The continued lack of demand for stooey for
business uses caused a decline in rates and in-
creasing competition for the limited supply of
mercantile paper. In some instances prime
paper was placed at low as 8 per cent In-
stitutions wh.ch uuby employ Itrge amounts
in this asy were forced to turn to other in-
vest men ti with the result that there wat a keen-
er demand for torn high grade bonds. The
market for bond as a' whole however at laid
by representatives of bond house to be some-
what disappointing.
The steady se.ling of Union Pacific made it
the feature of the day in th stock market.
This stock has been under press are tor so long
that considerable agnificance is attached to
its movements although the source of atiling
remains a matter of conjecture. The copper
hares were strong for a time. In the lata
dealings both Wcstughooee tnd General Elec-
tric gained more than 3 points. Central Leathi
er continued to decline. The preferred stock
at the low point of the day allowed a loss of
3. The bond a.o were heavy.
The bond market wat irregular with trans-
action! on s large scale. Total sale of bonds
par value were 34183888. U. S. bonds
