SECOND GAME
The. second game was as disastrous to
the Handcrab as the flrsg This time the
score was 8 to 1 but two runs did not
cross the plate until the ninth Inning; when
Wlnchell alsvcked down. Until the third
Inning not a hit was made off Wlnchell s
delivery. The Broncos s-ored two runs
In the first Inning but this was but a
foretaste of what was going to happen
In the remaining Innings. In the third
Hlrkey was batted all over the lot and
then In the fourth Edmot.dson was taken
from the outfield and put In the pitcher's

MUDCATS NO MORE
H0TJST0N BALL CLUB IS NOW
KNOWN AS BUFFALOES.
Patrons of the Game and Press of
tne Circuit Have Adopted the
New Name.
The Houston ball cluD Is now known
over the entire circuit ss the Buffsloes.
the name officially adopted by the Hous-
ton management newspapers and public
Originally the name of "Mudcats" was
given the Houston club as a term of de-
rtslon." reproach and Insult to the city
they represented. That was twenty years
ago. when conditions were pretty bad.
But the conditions have changed ma-
terially In the past few years and th.
epithet Is no longer even half way funny
and Is not at all Justified by ths condi-
tion of the streets which first gave rise
to the name. The name of the local CluD
has lieen changed several times duiins-
the past few years In an effort to get
something which would replace the "Mud-
cat" appellation and at th ssme time be
local In Its character. "Buffalo" seem
to fill the bill exactly and has proved
much more popular than has any of th
other names.
By some papers and people the old terra
has been used unthoughtsdlv and without
Intention of offending. The nam. Buf-
falo hsvlng proved a good one and hav-
ing been generally accepted the fact was
called to the attention of the editors of
the papers and they have most courte-
ously and without delay adopted the new
name in fact. It probably didn't occur
to them that the us of th old term was
dlstastsful to the cltlsens of Houston.
Buffalo has now been regularly adopted
by the press of th circuit snd only those
slmlln headed "humorists" who haver had
an original thought In their lives will con-
tinue to us It as It has been used In th
past In derision contempt and Insult. Of
course there are some of those Ilk left
at some spots on th circuit: thy ar In

nated though every rule of common sens
and public health and comfort would be
ubrvd by such as termination.

BISCH0FT DECISION FIXES IT.
Betting- Will Continue at the New
York Tracks.
(Houttcm Pott iftctai )
NEW YORK. July 4 There was more
real animation about racing today than
In many a long day as a result of th
decision of Justice Blsohoff In the case
of Melville Collins.
"The Collins case Includes practically
everything we hope for under the new
law" was the way various members of
the Jockey club expressed themselves.
Speaking for the Coney Island Jockey
club Schuyler L. Parsons said that
nothing In the way of Innovations would
be attempted until the lawyers had tlm
to thoroughly study the situation.
"We contended In court that our guests
had a right to wager on the results of
ra.-es If they pleased" he said. "Hut
they will not be permitted to do any-
thing In contravention of the law. Just
what can be legally permitted we will
know before long."
Turfmen about town talked only of the
decision and the view generally taken la
that a bet on a race In future must lie
purely a matter of credit until the result
of the contest decides the disposition of
the wager. On that point the decision
Is considered very plain. Instead of. as
In the past the bettor entrusting his
monev to the layer without receipt of
any kind tn future It will be a case o(
the two parties to a wager trusting each
other In other words credit betting
must be resorted to. The passage of
money however will no longer lie cause
for arrest If yesterday's decision holds.
This feature. It Is expected will grestly
help the attendance at tbe various tracks.
The crowds have been light liecause many
persons feared trouble with the police.
Acting District Attorney Elder of
Brooklyn said today h Is certain that
bookmakers and racing men are paying
the Jockey club for the privilege of
maklnlR bets at the track. Evidence to
that effect was obtained yesterday says
Mr. Elder. In the shape of memoranda
and papers found on the persons of trhl-
mann Dd Iyefkowlts said to be book-
makers who were arrested yesterday at
the dose of th sixth race. The district
attorney further declared that the of-
ficials of the Jockey club Instead of aid-
ing tn the enforcement of the antl-bettlng
law. have hindered his efforts at every
That Elder will proceed against th
officers of the Coney Island Jockey club
before the grand Jury Is the inference
drawn from a statement he made re-
lating to the mots recent developments
of the situation Just what form the tac-
tion of the district attorney will take
can not be stated definitely at tho mo-
