Davidson candidate 4or governor spoke
for about ana. hour and thirty minutes
tonight In the Interest of his candidacy. '
Mr. Davidson waa met by a reception
committee af local ctiaens. The spesk-
Ing took place In the city ball. Qulta a
numbsr of ladles were In the audience.
Mr. Davidson waa introduced by Mayor
Collier. -. '
He devoted most of his speech to a
severe arraignment of Mr. Colquitt and
tha first part of his speech was along
tha old lines; but at the close be took
occasion to again Introduce Bailey. With
reference to thla matter Mr. Davidson
said:
"Ballsy in a recent fetter charged that
Cone Johnson and myself had tried te
destroy him by Infamous slanders and
that he (Bailey) possessed personal
knowledge that we had spread false-
hoods about him and that - ws would
greatly abuse the office of governor
should either of ua be chosen to that
high position and that to defeat ua for
governor he would. If Peindexter - were
eliminated by the Antl-Bsloon league.take
the stump for Colquitt.
"In my San Antonio and Austin
speeches I denied that I had ever slan-
dered or told or circulated a . falsehood
about or concerning Bailey and de-
nounced his statement as untrue and de-
manded of him that ha name the slander
and falsehood and I : Would meet the
charge at the proper time and place; that
the people and democrats of Texas would
resent his attempted dictation In State
politics and his purposs to establish and
maintain political headquarters at Wash-
ington and from there Issue orders as Ha
who should be the nominee of the demo-
crats of Texas for governor. At thla
time Bailey has made no reply to my
challenge.
"But one of the men whom he said
slandered hint and told and circulated
falsehoods about him. Cone Johnson in-
stead of denying the charge against him
makes an stuck upon ma for denying
the charge and says my denial was too
late. I do not. know that Johnson Is
guilty of what Bailey charges. He does
not deny the charges. - It may be be
denlea In his orations te the people as a
candidate for delegate to the democratic
convention suco charges. If made as te
him were denied. May be so but John-
son Is now facs to faes with a naw or
an old charge which Bailey says unfits
Johnson for a high offios which he now
aeeka. therefore Johpson If for no other
reason should havs and It waa hla duty
to show the people that the charges are
not true' and that he is not morally dis-
qualified from being governor because
If what Bailey now says about Johnson
be true' he Is not fit' for that position.
Johpson and myself are both before tha
people for governor and Bailey says we
are morally unfit and will grossly sbuse
the powers of the high office. Therefore
the people should know and want to know
If these charges of Bailey pre tru i. Our
candidacy Is now before them and our
fitness or unfitness la the question bow
before the people. ' :
"Mr. Johnson can not plead and should
pot wsYit to plead the statutes of limita-
tion of two or four years to Bailey's
charge that Jis Is unfit for governor. Tha
ststute of limitation Is sometimes re-
sorted to when a man don't want t
plead to the merlta. - . .
-They are made again end made when
I am a candidate and -net when I was
bound and circumscribed by official du-
tiss and trying a suit wherein the ruin of
the whole people of Texas and the honor
of Texas were directly Involved. I am
now a free man and am not Foln" t
filead State demand nor the statute ef
Imitation ta these charges. The aeoa'P
went to know the truth about thsm espe-
cially as the man charged with slander H
now before them for governor.
"I will not attempt to advise Mr. Jdhn-
eon aa to hlg course when his persoryl
honor Is so seriously Involved but I
know mine. I wHI say thst If Balley'a
charges re true then neither af us are
qualified for governor. Therefore as for
myself these charges do not corns too
late to be barred by limitation but J
have demanded and agsln dsmand ef
Bailey t state tha slander or falsehood
which he says I am guilty ot utter-
ing and circulating and let the people In
this county pae upon my ui w in-
nocence. Henceforth I ask no quarter aad
