FIRED AT WIFE ON BUSY STREET;
PEDESTRIANS FLED FROM SCENE
John Kopriva Caused Great Excitement Saturday
Morning at Corner of Main and Preston
Missed Wife Then Turned Weapon on Self.
Fleeing before a rein of bulleta from a
pistol in the bands df John Kopriva a
machinist who had attacked his wife
cores of shoppers and bystanders at
Main and Preston Saturday morning at
10:J0 o'clock were sent scurrying for
cover crawling under automobiles and
dodging into stairways and behind trash
Koprira then turned the gun on him-
self firing one bullet throujrh his breast
above the heart inflicting a serious
wound.
Kopriva who is In the employ of the
Southern Pacific stood in the crush In
front of Rouse's drug store Ho-kton's
busiest corner waiting for his wife who
earlier In lhe morning had been granted
a divorce by Judge William Mastefon.
As she approached with a woman
friend and ErneS?y Holly an interpreter
Kopriva elbowed his way to meet her
and drawing the pistol masked in a
handkerchief began shooting. A man
sitting In an automobile at the curb taint-
ed. Men ran. literally from "under their
hats" as the nistol cracked.
CHAOS REIGNED IN
DRUG STORE.
Mrs. KoDriva dashed into the Preston
avenue entrance of Rause's Qrvg store
where chaos alreadyreignetl. The .eport
of the gun sent a storeful of patrons.
among them many women who were
drinking at the soda fountain rushing
for the door. But another shot seem-
ingly coming from Main street drove
them back.
As the sound of the shots came closer
Mrs. Kopriva leaped over the soda foun-
tain counter and begged for protection.
Officer McNutt handling traffic at Main
and Preston heard the first shot but
thought it was an auto tire until the
crowd began' to scatter. He rushed to-
ward the machinist as he raised the pistol
to his left breast' and as many looked on
aghast fired twice. One bullet went un-
der his arm glancing and piercing the
right thigh of Holly who was fleeing.
The other entered just above the heart
and came out on the left side under the
arm.
CHANCE FOR RECOVERY
REGARDED GOOD.
Officer McNutt knocked the pistol from
the man's hands as he fired the last shot
being unable to reach him sooner and
held him. Westhelmer's ambulance was
summoned and the man' was taken to
St. Joseph's infirmary where it was said
late Saturday evening iat his chance for
recovery Is good.
"Finish me for God's sake finish me"
begged the wounded man of the officer.
As Kopriva approached his wife. Mr.

Holly saw him draw the weapon and
leaped on him. but the machinist flung
him off with apparent ease.
While Kopriva was being taken to the
hospital Mr. Holly was taken to Dr. W.
G. Priester's office where his wound was
dressed. Kopriva had his back turned
when Mr. Holly was shot and from the
additional fact that he was not wounded
until the machinist turned the gun on
himself It is believed that the bullet must
have glanced. He suffered only a slight
flesh wound.
SEVERAL OFFICERS
RUSHED TO SCENE.
The report of the pistol also brought
Chief of Detectives Murphy Deputy
Sheriff Sanders and Officer Gentry all of
whom were within a block of the scene.
Mr. McNutt. however had him in tow
by the time they reached him.
Mrs- Kopriva's woman friend escaped
injury having fled to a place of safety
the Instant the shooting began. She later
went to the police station with Mrs. Ko-
priva. Later Mrs. Kopriva went to the
home of a friend at 2013 Johnson street.
Mr. Holly was taken to his home on
Brownsville street In the Harbor Home-
site addition.
W. E. Weems attorney for Mrs. Ko-
priva stated that her husband appeared
at his office an hour before the shooting
and asked about the divorce. He had
been there on several occasions he said
and In the company of his wife not fnfre-
quently. Mr. Weems told him the divorce
case was scheduled for hearing Saturday
morning and he left.
The pistol he used waa a M-callber
double-action and new the price tag hav-
ing not been removed.
Kopriva told physicians at the infirmary
that he did not want to die; that he
wished to live for his children. He has
six two by his divorced wife and four by
a former.
Mr. Holly had been employed in the
Scania n building but being able to speak
Bohemian was asked by Mr. Weems to
interpret for him at the divorce hear-
ing. When they left the court room Mrs.
Kopriva expressed some fear of her hus-
band but her friends reassured her.
NEGRO GATHERED
ARMFUL OF HATS.
After the excitement attending the
shooting had calmed a negro appeared in
the "Rouse drug store with an armful of
straw tiats gathered up from the street
where pedestrians bad dropped them in
their rush.
Dr. M. Sandel a dentist at 117 H Main
street witnessed the shooting from his
office window and expressed commenda-
tion of Officer McNutt who ha said
rushed toward the machinist while others
closer fled. . .
At Mil Johnson street Mrs. Kopriva
waa suffering from nervous breakdown
and declined to aee newspaper men. At
Bt .Joseph's Infirmary physicians declined
to allow Kopriva to be interviewed fear
ing that the exertion might produce a
hemorrhage and result in death.
