"An Afternoon With the American
Poets" was the theme of Wednesday aft-
ernoon's meeting of the TWenty-siz club
with the president Mrs. Pat Dougherty
as hostess. After s brief business meet-
ing the program was opened with re-
sponses to roU call of famous poems.
Then the leader. Mra. A. H. Oelkers. alter
reading an English and aa Amerloan
poem called for a discussion of the mer-
its of each and of Kngllah influence on
American poetry. This discussion
brought out the fact that ths environ-
ment of America has produced originality
in many of Its famous poets.
Fire-minute discussions of four Ameri
can poets touowea. iney were wiuiams
Cullen Bryant Henry Wadsworth Long
fellow James Russell Lowell and Jaaue I
Whltcomb Riley. Brief biographies of
these men were given: but particular
stress was placed upon the work accom
plished and the personality and original-
ity of each In his work. As impressive
extract from the discussions Mrs. C M.
Crawford said of Bryant: "It is said that
genius manifests Itself before Its posses-
sor reaches) manhood. Perhaps in no case
la this more true than in that of the poet
and Bryant was no exception. His best
known poems are 'A Forest Hymn'
The Death of the Flowers' Thanatop-
sii' and 'Lines to a Water Fowl.' He
also made a translation of Homer when
77 rears old."
Mrs. J. L. HcReynolds quoted this trib-
ute to Longfellow: "A pure upright
beautiful soul whose life waa lore: ne
cessity was kindness whose action was
blameless. This man thought no eviL
poke no bitter word nor touched an
other life ungently. He went across the
world with a song the song of peace on
earth good will to men. and none of the
Immortals has left more refreshing or
ennobling music to thrill our sad hu
manity on its daily march man has our
own. our brotherly Longfellow."
Mrs. m. J. wedemeyer said of Lowell:
Both as an essayist and poet he had
the wisdom of the scholar and the horse
sense of the man of the world. As a
satirist and humorist he produced the
'Blgtow Papers.' a work which Is unlaue
in American literature."
Mrs. F. L. MendenhaD. said of Riley:
It is a truism that to understand any
man's work ons must understand his en-
vironment. This is especially true of
a poet; for his work represents so much
of the man himself and he in turn is very
largely a product of external circum
stances plus that Inborn quality ws call
genius. Those who are fortunate enough
to count Hiiey among their friends al
ways characterise him as lovable sym
pathetic easy and natural in manner
with the light of -humor playing on his
face. He is broad minded lenient aa re-
gards the failings of others and a se
vere critic of his own."
Mrs. J. H. Van Dusen followed With a
reading of "The American Flag."
