BY "ANDY."
In a game that set a time record the Galveston Sand Crabs came
from behind Sunday at West End park and handed the Buffs a 4 to 1
defeat.
Heretofore this season the games played at West End have been
' flow and drawn out. Sunday's was the first conflict to be completed In
f less than two hours. The game was In a sense a pitchers' battle between
Ike Pearson for the Buffs and Jack Knight for the' Crabs but the players
showed considerable of a willingness to hustle to and from their
positions thereby pleasing the fana and adding considerable to the
i Interest of the fray.
Ike pitched a game that would have ordinarily been won but with
1 Knight seldom in danger and the Buffs unable to hit In anything like
7 timely fashion Ike's efforts were
- wasted.
t Umpa Is Hurt
v ' That Houston haa been getting good
! umpiring In the present aerlea was
' . atteated by the Urge crowd that
taw the game when Umpire Harry
. Kane waa Injured In the fourth ln-
. nlng. Ordinarily fans are wont to
how their Joy when an umpire Is
beaned but Sunday all waa alienee
while the umpa waa being worked on
by a group of players and when lie
returned to the game waa roundly
' applauded. It la aeldom that one haa
a chance to aay anything In favor or
an umpire but Kane and O'Toole
who have worked the preaent aeries.
have missed fewer decisions than any
pair of umpa seen here this season.
" The playera evidently appreciate thla
also Inasmuch as they do nine argu-
ing. Once In a while a player pro-
t teats a decision rendered but the use
" of profanity and ugly displays of
' temper have been practically done
away with during the present series
all. of which proves that this brand
. of rowdyism haa no pla.e In baseball.
. Sunday's game deaplte the fact that
Houston lost waa pleasing to the
. crowd.
Baggan vs. Blttle.
It was In a sense a battle of left;
fielder. Little Johnny Baggan for
the Craba and Blttle for the Buffs.
turning In a number ci brlllUint
V catches. Baggan'a triple over Joief-
son's head In the fifth Jnnlng gave
i ' the Craba a run and aent them Into
7 the lead whlje Blttle was purposely
. walked with the bases filled in the
' alxth.
In connection with th is walk Griffith
took a chance that Texas league
managers are not in ine naou oi lad-
ing when he ordered Blttle walked
to get Manager George Whlteman.
! Whiter la a .dangerous pinch hitter
' and with the baaea Jammed and two
- down fans pulled for blm to upset the
.'. dope and crash one. Hla best effort
waa a long fly to deep leftfleld.
' la thla same inning Oene Bailey
turned in a particularly unusual bit
. of base rurinlng. He singled to third
and Moore's throw went wild. Bailey
Seelng that second vaa uncovered
. dashed for the bag.
' Houston started In the lead getting
a run in the third inning. Joe Doyle
- who haa been hitting well In the paat
few games aent a single over aecond.
- Polan sacrificed and Pearson fanned.
1 ' Red Joaefson then aingled acorlng
Doyle from aecond. Josef son's single
went to rightfield and Lloyd Sllcott
' former- Buff outfielder waa unable to
throw the ball anywhere near the
plate.
This lead waa good enough until the
fifth when the Craba acored a pair
. of rune. Griffith's grounder waa
fumbled by Gross and then thrown
i- wild. Griffith stole second. Knight
' singled and Griffith scored. Johnny
Baggan then poled one to deep right-
' field for three bases and Knight
acored. -
Pearson was touched for three hlta
j In the alxth and another Crab run
; resulted. Sllcott aingled after one
'-. man had been retired. I-. Smith flew
. out to right and Moore aingled. M.
Smith followeu with a single scoring
'- Sllcott.
The last Crab tally came In the
eighth. Hendricks started with a sin-
gle. Sllcott sacrificed. L. Smith was
' out to Whlteman. Moore then aingled
to left acorlng Hendricks. Moore waa
out trying to atretch he hit into a
y double.'
That ended the acorlng for both
teams and aside from the alxth inning
1 Houston had little chance for a run.

INSTITUTE TRACK
TEAM PREPARES
FOR AGGIE MEET
During the coming week the Rice
track men will prepare themselves for
the dual meet with A. and M. Friday
April 38. at College Station. The Owl
track team will leave Friday morYiIng
for thia meet returning early Satur
day. 4
Since thd Illinois meet the men have
let up In their extensive training but
now with only a few daya before the
Aggie track and field battle the Rice
Owla will aettle down again to tbeir
regular routine of work. -
"Saturday afternoon aome of tbe Rice
runnera were timed In their respective
events.. Ooss and Llntjsey stepped out
a pretty century making the distance
in tha usual time oflO flat. Neither
one of these Rice daah men have been
able to cope with .the time that they
established on the cinder path last
year mainly 9 4-6 seconds. However
Llndsey is expected to gain his old
stride by the end of this week. Ooss
s also rutting the fraction of seconds
of the 220 which is the race that he
is noted in taking first place In.
Leftwich Rice a new mller made the
four lapa in tetter time than he haa
ever run it. He ran tbe mile .Satur
day in 4 minutes and 62 seconds! It la
expected that he will do better In the
meets to come In this event.
Jameraon Is another new man on
the Owl squad that is drawing admira-
tion from hla teammates. Jameraon ta
fast getting down a good quarter mile
stride. It waa In the Illinois track
meet that Jameraon first ahowed up
aa a quarter miler. He ran a good
race againat the Illlnl men In this
event and through lack of 'Inexpe-
rience he was unable to score for Rloe
but finished fourth. Under the care
ful K coaching of Arbuckle Jameraon
will undoubtedly ba developed Into one
of the best quarter mllers that Rice
haa ever had and by the time of the
conference meet ahould be stepping a
last 440.
- Chances against A. and M. for Rfce
this Friday look sttm but the Owl
track squad an not undetermined.
They will go to College Station p full
unit and will give the-Aggies a hard
right in an events.
The Aggie track team waa able to
mark up another victory on Its track
slate last Saturday when it sent the
Baylor Bears back to Waco defeated.
They have some point winners both
in the field events and on tha cinder
path. . Keen the siant Texas Fanner
la a sure point winner and recorded
himself as being . high point man
againat tne Bruina in the field events.
Crosby la their star dash man rank'
Ing second for honors la high points.

Herman-Tillman Bouf
Being a classy boxer and havjng daz-

and doing the same thing against
a topnotcher Is a different matter. At
least those wise to the inside of the
mitt game know it is. That la why
they are nhaklng their heads consid-
erably and refusing to offer comment
when the subject of TIIHe Kid Herman
and Johnny Tillman jirlses.
Every local fan knows what Herman
can do against aecond raters. He has
demonstrated time and again that he
outclasses this class of miller. What
he can do against a wily ring veteran

Swimming Season to
Start at Y This Week
The summer swimming program of
the T. M.i C. A. will be officially
Inaugurated thla week with the stag-
ing of the swimming and life saving
pentathlon for boys. Eve.y member
of the boys' department of the "Y"
Is urged to take part In the pentathlon.
Secretary W. T. Hunt la anxious that
aa many boys take part In this meet
as participated tn the hexathlon. The
pentathlon is to aquatics what the
hexathlon la to athletics.
According to Hunt the fact that a
boy can not swim very well is hot
.acceptable aa an excuae for his stay-
ing; out. Every "Y" member should
be a good awlmmer. It haa been the
Y. M. C. A. motto for years that
"Every member be a awlmmer and
every swimmer a life saver." Every!
boy ahould for his own good get In
ana maxe some sort oi an effort on
as many of the five events as he can
take at all.
The pentathlon haa all of the at-
tractiveness of a competitive swim-
ming meet and besides contains a
world of Instruction In swimming and
life saving. Every boy should consider.
ii nia auty not opiy to learn how to
swim well but how to meet emerg-
ency In the case of a drowning or
near drowning. The confidence nf
knowing that ypti can take care ofl
yourself In the water la even more
helpful when you can swm for two or
in otner woros save a life.
Jfrincipai s. p. Waltrlp of the
neignts High school will be in gen-

will be assisted by a big group of

may do so by seeing W. T'. Hunt
