of the present world clash the clash of
liberty and bondage of thought.
That was the opinion expressed by
James V. Elliott. New York author in
an address before members of the fjotary
dub at the weekly luncheon at the Rice
hotel at noon Thursday. Mr. Elliott was
the principal speaker on the program hit
subject being "A Man's Message to Men."
In his address Mr. Elliott showed that
the greatest asset to the road to success
of any man or woman is personality. He
made a plea for the building of the fear-
less honest never-r ay-die type of young
o tan hood.
"The status of the business man of to-
day and h'is relation to -his business has
undergone a great change over that rela-
tion of a few years ago." Mi. Elliott said.
'.'Where the sharp business man of the old
type was expected to be deceptive ana
use any fraudulent methods to make a
Sain over his patrons the successful busi-
ness man of today is he who practices
the strictest honesty both with himself
and his patron and concentrates his en-
tire efforts toward honest dealings giving
the customer the lull value Tor money ex-
pended. "The ideal business life is the simple
business life the dealings of man to man.
and those dealings must be honest and
there is now a tendency to returti to those
natural business life methods where every
man pursues his own vocation dealing out
to his fellow men tin? same strict honesty
as he wishes 10 be returned to hlro. He
should transact hla actions in every-day
life in the belief that nature will reward
every one in accordance with his Just
desserts that he will 'reap exactly what
ne sows.
- "I predict that the superior means of
communication between man and man
which is gradually developing will mean
the entire elimination of the business roan
who practices deception and'fraud and
offers the public anything less than 'the
best In the articles he handles."
Mr. Elliott closed his address with a
tribute to the National Organisation of
Rotary clubs and urged that special ef-
forts be made by the local members to
allow the young men to get some of tho
business inspirations from the different
meetings of the Rotary members.
The 128 persons attending the luncheon
were entertained by the singing of Miss
NU O'Connel the little Irish singer now
playing at the 'Majestic theater. Mr.
Leipzig the card expert also on the Ma-
jestic program demonstiated to the audi-
ence something of card magic.

Most Stolen Autos
Returned to Owners
Of the 117 automobiles reported to the
police department aa having been stolen
during 1917. all but 15 were recovered.
Most of those not located have either been
taken to other parts of the country or
have been broken up and the various
parts disposed of to second-hand dealers.
The fact that so many were found and
returned to the owners fs regarded as
showing that the department is surely
closing down on auto thieves.

Distributed Presents
For French Children
1
Soldiers and sailors across the Water
have carried with them the spirit of the
saying that it is "more blessed to giro
than to receive." according to a letter re-
cently received from one of the Houston
boys "somewhere in France."
The soldier writes that the sailors and
soldiers stationed at one of the seaports
on Christmas day had a splendid Christ-
mas but that they were not content with
their own pleasures and gave cheer to
others also.
The writer stated that the 'boys' took
up a collection and gave an entertain-
ment for the poor children of the small
city each child receiving a Christmas
present. The writer" of the letter also
highly praised the work of the Young
Men's Christian Association.
