With a new head coach, the NT men's
basketball team garnished an 11-17 record
in a season full of "near misses."
"The only problem I had this season was
pinpointing where we went wrong," head
Coach Jimmy Gales said. "I can usually
pinpoint the reason we lost a game, but
this year there were games that I couldn't
figure out. It gave me a lot of trouble."
"I enjoyed playing with all the players
on the team," said Detroit senior Floyd
Singleton who was the scoring leader in
three of NT's 28 games. "It was a learning
process with coach Gales. I learned a lot
from him. He didn't let a person get down
on himself."
Keenan DeBose, a Killeen senior, said
he really enjoyed the season and working
with Gales. "I just wish things had gone aI from s
little better," he said.
The Eagles went into their first South-
land Conference game with a 5-8 record
and lost to Lamar State University, 72-63.
A win against McNeese State University,
72-64, followed. Next came two losses
against Louisiana Tech, 98-71, and North-
east Louisiana University, 66-53.
The Mean Green followed the two losses
with a win over Arkansas State University,
59-56, but they lost to Arkansas in a sec-
ond game, 75-74. The Eagles continued
the season with a win over Lamar, 98-84, a
loss against McNeese, 98-88, and a win
over Northeast Louisiana, 83-80. NT
rounded out the season with two losses
against Louisiana Tech and Lamar.
"We had a pretty good year," DeBose
said. "I think we could have done better, cratch
though."
"We had a lot of near misses," Gales
said. "I guess anybody will tell you how to
win the game after it has been played, but
there were about eight games that we lost
which we should have won. Good teams do
not get big leads and then lose them."
Moving up and down the floor was one
of the team's good points, said Singleton.
"The coach let us run a lot because that
is what everyone wanted to do," he said
